Overcoming Dyslexia: A Journey of Perseverance by Ethan - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
One of the most challenging academic experiences I have faced is living with dyslexia. From a young age, I struggled with reading, writing, and spelling, which made schoolwork frustrating and discouraging. Tasks that seemed easy for my peers, like reading aloud in class or finishing assignments quickly, felt overwhelming to me. At times, I doubted my ability to succeed academically. However, this challenge shaped my character and taught me the value of perseverance.
To overcome these difficulties, I worked closely with tutors who specialized in helping students with dyslexia. Through years of intensive practice, I learned strategies to improve my reading comprehension and writing skills. Breaking down words into smaller parts, using assistive technology, and practicing repeatedly became part of my daily routine. Over time, I began to notice real progress—not only in my academics but also in my confidence.
The process wasn’t easy, but it taught me resilience and patience. By the time I reached high school, I had significantly improved my reading and writing abilities. Today, I experience only minor difficulties, and I’ve developed techniques to handle them effectively. I even find joy in writing and reading, which once seemed impossible.
This experience taught me that challenges don’t define us; how we respond to them does. Dyslexia no longer feels like a limitation, but a reminder of what I can achieve with hard work and support. Overcoming this challenge has prepared me to tackle any obstacle I face in the future with determination and confidence.
