Beautiful Crafts of the Human Mind by Forest - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

"Educationists should build the capacities of the spirit of inquiry, creativity, entrepreneurial and moral leadership among students and become their role model." I find this quote by author A.B.J. Abdul Kalam very inspirational. I think that there are many teachers, administrators, school board members, politicians. etc. That should read this quote and apply it to the curriculum that is taught to students all over the country. Too much of student's creativity is being held down by the pressure and distress of standardized testing. If roles were reversed I would teach creative writing because standardized tests have taken the emphasis off of creativity and focused it on multiple choice tests, the curriculum of the class would help you get closer to students, and there are more and more students today that see writing as a chore rater than a beautiful craft of the human mind.
One reason that I would teach creative writing is because standardized tests have taken emphasis off of creativity and focused it on multiple choice tests. I believe that creativity is vital to the human mind and the stress of standardized tests is ruining it. According to psychologist Dr. Robert Epstein, "Stress negatively impacts creative expression, particularly when it involves rigid time-frames and criteria." With all of this criteria and rigid time-frames, students are losing their creativity, and with adolescents losing the creative aspect of their minds, kids who could have been inventors, engineers, artists, and authors are now being stuck in jobs that they are not enjoying and society will never see the work that they could have created.
Another reason that I would teach creative writing is because I would get a much closer look into the lives and personalities of students than all of the other teachers do. For example, in teaching creative writing, One would get to read all of the work of all the students in all of your classes. When you read their writing one can get a firsthand look into what goes on in their mind and things that go on in their lives. In their writing and one's reading, one can find lots of connections with the student and become a much closer and beneficial teacher to the student.
The last reason that I would teach creative writing is because too many students today see writing as a chore rather than a beautiful craft of the human mind. Criteria that students have to meet and the curriculum that teachers have to teach has made writing very tedious for students. In teaching creative writing, there will be no special criteria to meet or special curriculum to teach. The class will just consist of the students expressing their creativity and me assisting them.
In sum, if roles were reversed I would teach creative writing because standardized tests have taken the emphasis off of creativity and focused it on multiple choice tests, the curriculum of the class would help you get closer to students, and there are more and more students today that see writing as a chore rater than a beautiful craft of the human mind. Writing is not a punishment and should not be taught as one. Creativity is important for the development of kids and should not be infringed. I would teach creative writing because creativity and writing are two of the most beautiful crafts of the human mind.
