My name is Francois Billong, and I am a high school senior with a deep interest in pursuing civil engineering at the collegiate level. As I consider universities such as the University of North Texas, University of Texas Austin, Louisiana State University, and University of Texas-Arlington, I reflect on a particularly challenging academic experience that has significantly shaped my educational journey: mastering the complexities of calculus.
Mathematics has long been a subject I have enjoyed, yet the transition to calculus presented a formidable challenge. The leap from algebra and geometry to the abstract concepts of limits, derivatives, and integrals was akin to entering a new realm with its own set of rules and language. During the initial weeks of my calculus class, I often felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of new information and the intricacies of the subject matter.
The first major obstacle arose with our initial examination on derivatives. Despite dedicating substantial time to study, I found myself struggling to comprehend the questions, which seemed to present unexpected twists and complexities. When the test was returned, my grade was disappointing, and I realized that my previous study methods were insufficient for this advanced level of mathematics.
Determined to overcome this setback, I resolved to adopt a new approach to my studies. I began by seeking assistance from my calculus teacher, who graciously offered additional tutoring sessions.
