Overcoming Setbacks: A Lesson in Resilience by Gabby - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As I submitted my college applications, I found myself deeply concerned about how my performance in AP Calculus—my only course in which I received a significantly lower grade—might affect my prospects, especially considering my otherwise strong GPA and standing in the top 10% of my class. I have always prided myself on maintaining high academic standards and excelling in my coursework, and I have worked tirelessly to balance my academic responsibilities with leadership roles in several extracurricular activities. This grade, however, has caused me to question whether it could overshadow the hard work and dedication I have consistently shown in my other courses.
Mathematics has always been one of my favorite subjects, and I have excelled in it throughout my academic career. So, earning a disappointing grade in AP Calculus was unexpected and deeply disheartening. However, it has not diminished my enthusiasm for the subject or my determination to continue pursuing it. Rather, I have learned valuable lessons from this experience that have made me stronger.
The challenges in this course were primarily due to systemic issues within the class. In the fall semester, the main AP Calculus teacher was on sabbatical, and a substitute with limited knowledge of the material took over. Her approach—having us copy textbook notes with minimal explanation—left many students struggling. While she made efforts to offer extra credit to compensate for the lack of instruction, I was still left with gaps in my understanding. Despite my best efforts, I finished the semester with a B.
The spring semester brought additional challenges when the course transitioned to a new teacher. While knowledgeable, his teaching style was difficult to follow. He expected us to understand complex material without adequate instruction, often introducing new content through online videos and assigning frequent tests with little time for review. The inconsistent teaching left me struggling to grasp key concepts, and despite my continuous efforts, I ended up with a D in the spring semester.
This grade is an anomaly in my academic record, which is otherwise marked by mostly As and a few Bs. I take full responsibility for the grade but also feel that the systemic issues within the course played a significant role in my struggles. As I prepare for college and reflect on my application, I am concerned about how this grade might impact my chances, given my otherwise stellar academic record and extracurricular commitments.
However, this experience has ultimately made me stronger. It has taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability. While I was initially disheartened, I have come to view this setback as a minor detour in my academic journey. I am more determined than ever to master calculus in a more supportive environment in college, and I believe this experience will only strengthen my resolve to overcome future challenges.
Despite this disappointment, I remain committed to my academic and personal growth. I hope this explanation provides context and clarity about my dedication to my education and my ability to overcome obstacles. I know that I will carry the lessons learned from this experience forward as I continue my journey in higher education.
