Community service makes a differnce by Gabriel - January 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I had to be completely honest, helping my community and school in the best way possible is second nature for me. All my life I have always been involved in many different types of community events to improve this small section of the world we call our own. I have volunteered for many different types of events, companies, schools, and for different causes. Some of the clubs I have volunteered for many clubs at my High School, River City High School in West Sacramento. Some of the clubs are named River City Scholars and Link crew. The main companies I have volunteered for in the past is The Sacramento County Office of Education, which deals with financial aid for college. Volunteer work and extracurricular activities inspire people to make a difference once they see how much their communities are benefiting from the help. I’m sure I believe I do not speak for myself when I say I am one of those people. I do volunteer work because I see how my community changes positively and gets the recognition it deserves.
In an effort to provide my school with my help and make it a better place than it already is, I have joined a club called Link Crew. What Link Crew does is that we make the incoming class of freshmen and any other students familiarize themselves to River City. We make them feel important and treat them with the up most respect. I was inspired to do this for many reasons. The first is that if gave me a chance to connect with more people and meet new friends at my school, and the fact that I am doing something positive for my school just makes me incredibly joyous. Another reason is I wanted to make the incoming class of freshmen feel safe. There have always been concerns about being a freshmen due to superstitions of being picked a lot because you are the youngest, dropping out due to the difficult school work, and not making any friends. We are here to help them get over those fears and be there when they need a helping hand. I also plan on doing more positive things for my school with the club that I am president of River City Scholars. I have been a part of it for three years and finally got to be to one running the whole show. River City Scholars helps fund-raise money to pay off AP test, which if ass those test can grant high school students college credits and save them money in the future for not having to take as many classes. One AP test alone can almost come out to be $100. For the people who are taking multiple AP classes that is a lot of money, so we make a bit easier for them. We want to give the students who deserve a shot at taking those test, more than anyone, help in any way we can. River City Scholars is dedicated to helping the students and give credit where credit is due.
To make my community a better place I have volunteered not only at my own school but many others as well at FAFSA cash for college events. I have been volunteering at these for as long as I can remember. These events have always been in my life because my mother rubs them. What I do is that I help organize the computers and directing them to correct websites. I also sign people in or out if the events and check if they have completed all their work in other to receive their FAFSA’s. FAFSAs are basically scholarship for college. People come to see their finical status or eligibility for scholarships and federal aid for college. We help them apply for both scholarships and federal aid and at the end of their stay we give them a free online survey that qualifies anyone, regardless of financial status, a chance to win a scholarship. I volunteer at these events because I want to help people with the college process and make it easier on them, doing so makes a positive outcome on not only that school but the community.
All my life I have gone to school in West Sacramento, California. To me and anyone else who lives there can agree that the community is one of a kind. However to outsiders it can be described as violent, uneducated, and just ghetto. The community itself knows for a fact that we are not any of these things. The main reason I help volunteer is to show other that we are not a “ghetto” community. With all the clubs at my school and the work I do with the Sacramento County Office of Education we make the community a better place and sow other communities that we are not what they think. The volunteer work I do has and still inspires me to make a difference in my community and influence others to do the same as I have.
