Preserving a World's Story by Hannah - April 2025 Scholarship Essay
I had taken an online course on classical children’s literature. One of the stories the class taught was Hans Christian Anderson’s Snow Queen. The lesson showed how he reconciled reason and faith. It surprised me how a simple children’s fairytale could teach such a deep concept. I realized that art isn’t just for beauty or aesthetics. It also tells a story and teaches. The artist’s life and personal beliefs influenced their work. Their art is a story. Artists share messages, truths and emotions that resonate within them through their work. I became curious how artists do this, like uncovering a mystery. Metaphors, setting, character, and motifs are the writer’s tools. Symbolism, color, subject, and composition are the artist’s. The experience of learning the hidden meanings of literature has inspired me to do the same with art.
I hope to utilize a degree in chemistry to become an art restorationist. Art restorationists study the chemical make-up of artifacts and their reactions with external conditions. They come up with solutions to protect the pieces from deterioration and to repair existing damage. Art conservation requires attention to detail, problem solving, and discipline.
Becoming an art restorationist is more than just technical learning. They also become knowledgeable in history, culture, and the impact of art. Art is a window into human nature. It was an influential tool to advocate for important causes throughout history. Subjects like art, literature, and music are a record of humanity's history. I am fascinated by the role restorationists play in preserving this history. I see this profession as an opportunity to travel, learn about different cultures' histories, and to understand the role art played.
