What is College Success? by Harmony - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

In order to be able to determine what is needed for college success, one must first determine what exactly college success is. This can be a tricky little question here because people go to college for different reasons and pursue different completely different results.

For example, just over 50 years ago it was assumed that a woman would only be in college to find a husband. Whether or not leadership skills were helpful for success in such a task is an essay on its own, but one can safely say that they were not “necessary.”

For someone going to college with the intent of setting up a successful political career, having or developing leadership skills is practically mandatory. They would need to be able to speak to and convince large groups of people to trust them. They would need to make connections and get their name in the minds of their future constituents. While it would be unusual for these to be on academic the curriculum, it is definitely necessary for this person to master these skills by graduation in order for them to have utilized their college time to its fullest potential.

Another student could be going to school to create their identity. Maybe they find that they are a leader. Or maybe they find a loner. They may find the grace in being the person who is lead. Either way, they have succeeded.

So, in conclusion, are leadership skills necessary for college success? No. College is to help students find who they are and what they want, and the only things needed for college success are the tools and courage to take life by the horns and make their dreams come true.
