Challenges by Isabella - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

During my high school years, academics have not always come easy to me. One of the most challenging experiences I faced was in my sophomore year when I took a geometry class. Math has never been my strongest subject, but I was determined to do well. However, as the semester progressed, I found myself struggling more and more with the concepts. My grades started slipping, and I felt overwhelmed and discouraged.

The turning point came after I received a particularly low score on a test. I realized that if I did not do something different, I would continue to struggle, and my goal of pursuing a career in interior design or architecture might be in jeopardy. I knew I needed to find a way to overcome this academic challenge, so I decided to take action.

The first step I took was reaching out for help. I approached my geometry teacher and explained my difficulties. She was understanding and offered to help me after school. Those extra sessions were incredibly helpful because she explained the concepts in a way that made more sense to me. I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were doing well in the class. Working together allowed us to share different perspectives and problem-solving techniques. It was reassuring to know that I was not alone in my struggles.

In addition to seeking help from others, I realized that I needed to change my study habits. I started dedicating more time to reviewing my notes and practicing problems every day, rather than cramming the night before a test. I also began using online resources, like educational videos and math websites, which provided additional explanations and practice problems. This variety of resources helped reinforce what I was learning in class.

Another important aspect of overcoming this challenge was developing a positive mindset. At first, I was very hard on myself for not understanding the material as quickly as others seemed to. However, I realized that everyone learns at their own pace, and it was okay to ask for help. I began to focus on the progress I was making, no matter how small, instead of dwelling on my past mistakes. This shift in attitude made a big difference in my motivation and confidence.

As the semester went on, I started seeing improvement. My test scores gradually increased, and I felt more comfortable with the material. By the end of the year, I had managed to raise my grade significantly. This experience taught me the value of persistence and the importance of utilizing available resources. It also showed me that setbacks do not define my abilities or my future.

Looking back, I am grateful for the lessons I learned during that challenging time. It reinforced my determination to pursue a career in fields like interior design or architecture, where creativity and problem-solving are key. I know that these areas will present their own challenges, but I am confident that the skills I developed in overcoming my struggles with geometry will help me tackle whatever comes my way.

In conclusion, facing and overcoming my difficulties in geometry was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It taught me the importance of seeking help, changing my approach, and maintaining a positive mindset. These lessons are ones that I will carry with me as I move forward into college and beyond. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and am determined to succeed in my chosen field.
