Finding Strength in Struggle: Lessons from AP Calculus by Isabelle - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As I reflect on my high school journey, one challenging academic experience stands out: my struggle with my AP Calculus class during senior year. Math had always been a subject I enjoyed, but calculus was a different beast. The concepts were abstract, and I felt like I was constantly trying to catch up. It was the first time I truly felt overwhelmed by a subject, and it tested both my academic skills and my perseverance.

At the beginning of the year, I walked into the classroom with a sense of confidence. However, as the weeks went by, I found myself grappling with limits, derivatives, and integrals. The pace of the class was fast, and I struggled to keep up with the new material. My first quiz score was a wake-up call; I realized that my usual study habits were not enough.

Feeling disheartened, I knew I needed a new approach. I started by seeking help from my teacher. This was a big step for me because I had always been a bit shy about asking for help, fearing it might make me seem less capable. However, my calculus teacher was incredibly supportive. She explained concepts in different ways until I understood and encouraged me to practice more problems. Her willingness to help outside of class hours made a significant difference.

In addition to my teacher’s support, I also formed a study group with a few classmates. We met twice a week to review homework problems and prepare for upcoming tests. This experience taught me the value of collaboration. Each of us had different strengths; some were better at understanding the theoretical aspects, while others excelled at solving practical problems. By working together, we were able to help each other and fill in the gaps in our understanding.

I also made use of online resources. Websites like Khan Academy and YouTube became my go-to for extra practice and different explanations of the same topics. Sometimes, hearing a concept explained in a different way was all I needed to grasp it. These resources were available anytime, which allowed me to learn at my own pace and revisit difficult topics as needed.

As the year progressed, I noticed a change. The concepts that once seemed impossible started to make sense. I became more confident in my abilities, and by the end of the year, I had also gained a deeper appreciation for the subject. More importantly, I learned that it is okay to struggle and that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness.

This experience taught me several valuable lessons that I will carry with me into college and beyond. First, it reinforced the importance of perseverance. Challenges are a part of life, and while they can be daunting, they are also opportunities for growth. Second, it highlighted the significance of seeking help and collaborating with others. No one has all the answers, and learning is often a team effort. Lastly, it showed me that adapting and finding new strategies is crucial when faced with difficulties.

As I prepare to attend the University of Houston and major in accounting, I know that these lessons will serve me well. Accounting, like calculus, will have its own set of challenges, but I am ready to face them. I am excited to dive into a field that combines my love for numbers with practical applications in the business world. I am eager to learn and grow, knowing that I have the tools to overcome obstacles.

In conclusion, my experience with AP Calculus was a turning point in my academic journey. It was a challenge that pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me resilience, collaboration, and adaptability. These skills will be invaluable as I pursue my degree and future career.
