As a student deeply passionate about the fields of engineering and mathematics, I have always been drawn to the challenges that these subjects present. The complexity and intricacy of solving problems in these areas have always fascinated me. However, one particular academic experience during my junior year at Rider High School tested my resilience and determination in ways I had not anticipated.
The challenge came in the form of my Advanced Placement Calculus class. Mathematics had always been a strong suit for me, but the transition to calculus was a significant leap. The abstract concepts and the level of analytical thinking required were unlike anything I had encountered before. Initially, I struggled to grasp the fundamental theorems and their applications. I found myself spending long hours on homework, only to realize that my answers were not aligning with the expected results. It was frustrating and, at times, disheartening.
The turning point came after our first major exam. Despite my efforts, I did not perform as well as I had hoped. I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. I decided to seek help and reached out to my teacher, who was incredibly supportive. She encouraged me to attend after-school tutoring sessions and to actively participate in study groups with my classmates. This was a humbling experience, as I had to acknowledge that I could not do it all on my own.
Joining a study group turned out to be one of the best decisions I made. Collaborating with my peers allowed me to see different perspectives and approaches to solving problems. We would tackle difficult problems together, and I found that explaining concepts to others helped reinforce my understanding. It was a supportive environment where we encouraged each other and celebrated our progress.
In addition to the study group, I began to utilize online resources such as educational videos and forums. These resources provided explanations and examples that complemented what I was learning in class. This shift in mindset helped alleviate some of the pressure I was putting on myself and allowed me to focus on improving rather than just getting the right answers.

By the time the next exam came around, I was better prepared and managed to achieve a score that reflected my hard work and perseverance.
