Trials of Determination by Isaiah - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a high school junior at Bridgeland High School, I have always been passionate about technology and its potential to change the world. My interest in computer engineering and computer science has driven me to take on challenging courses to prepare for my future studies hopefully at the University of Texas at Austin. However, one of the most challenging academic experiences I have faced was my first encounter with Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science.

When I first enrolled in AP Computer Science, I was excited to dive deeper into programming and learn more about algorithms and data structures. I had some basic knowledge of programming, but I soon realized that the course was much more demanding than I had anticipated. The pace was fast, and the concepts were complex. I found myself struggling to keep up with the assignments and the intricate details of coding.

The first few weeks were especially tough. I remember staring at my computer screen, trying to debug a program that just would not work. No matter how many times I reviewed my code, I could not figure out where I went wrong. It was frustrating and disheartening. I started to doubt my abilities and questioned if I was cut out for this field.

However, I knew that giving up was not an option. I was determined to overcome this challenge and prove to myself that I could succeed. I realized that I needed to change my approach and seek help when necessary. So, I decided to reach out to my teacher for guidance. This was not easy for me, as I was used to figuring things out on my own, but I knew it was necessary.

My teacher was incredibly supportive and patient. He helped me understand the concepts I was struggling with and showed me different ways to approach problem-solving. He also encouraged me to work with my classmates, which opened up a whole new way of learning for me. Collaborating with others allowed me to see different perspectives and learn from their experiences.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher and peers, I also dedicated more time to practice coding on my own. I found online resources and tutorials that helped reinforce what I was learning in class. I set aside time each day to work on coding exercises, which gradually improved my skills and boosted my confidence.

Through perseverance and a willingness to seek help, I was able to overcome the initial difficulties I faced in AP Computer Science. By the end of the semester, I not only caught up with the class but also excelled beyond my expectations. I learned that it is okay to struggle and that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.

This experience taught me valuable lessons about resilience and the importance of a growth mindset. It showed me that challenges are opportunities for growth and that persistence can lead to success. I also realized the power of collaboration and how working with others can enhance learning and problem-solving.

As I look forward to pursuing a degree in information systems or computer science at the University of Texas at Austin, I am grateful for the lessons I learned from this challenging experience. It has prepared me to tackle future academic challenges with confidence and determination. I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and am incredibly eager to contribute to the field of technology.

In conclusion, overcoming the challenges I faced in AP Computer Science has been a defining moment in my academic journey. It has strengthened my resolve to pursue my passion for technology and has equipped me with the skills and mindset needed to succeed in college and beyond. I am thankful for the support I received from my teacher and classmates, and I am committed to continuing to learn and grow as I embark on this exciting path.
