Challenges of sophomore year by Jada - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

When I think about the most challenging academic experience I have faced, I am reminded of my sophomore year at Lake Central High School. It was a time when I was trying to balance a demanding course load, including advanced classes, while also being involved in extracurricular activities. One class, in particular, stood out as a significant challenge: Geometry.

Geometry was a subject that did not come naturally to me. The concepts were complex, and I often found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the class. It was not just about memorizing the formulas. I felt overwhelmed and, at times, defeated.

Despite my struggles, I was determined not to give up. I knew that overcoming this challenge would require a new approach to learning and a commitment to improving my study habits. The first step I took was to reach out for help. I started by talking to my teacher, who was supportive and understanding. She suggested that I attend PTE tutoring sessions , where I could get one-on-one assistance with the topics I found most difficult.

Attending these tutoring sessions became a turning point for me. Not only did they provide me with the opportunity to ask questions and clarify my doubts, but they also helped me develop a deeper understanding of the subject. I learned to break down complex problems into smaller, more manageable parts, which made them less intimidating. The tutors were patient and encouraged me to think critically, which boosted my confidence.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher and tutors, I also formed a study group with some classmates. We met regularly to review material, work on practice problems, and quiz each other on key concepts. This collaborative environment was incredibly beneficial because it allowed us to learn from each other’s strengths and perspectives. We motivated one another and celebrated our progress together, which made the experience less isolating.

I also realized that my study habits needed improvement. I began to dedicate specific times each day to studying Geometry, ensuring that I was consistent and focused. I used a variety of resources, such as online videos, interactive simulations, and practice tests, to reinforce my learning. By diversifying my study methods, I was able to engage with the material in different ways, which helped solidify my understanding.

Throughout this journey, I learned the importance of perseverance and resilience. There were times when I felt like I was not making any progress, but I reminded myself that improvement takes time and effort. Each small victory, whether it was understanding a difficult concept or performing well on a quiz, motivated me to keep pushing forward.

By the end of the semester, my hard work paid off. I saw a significant improvement in my grades and, more importantly, I gained a newfound confidence in my ability to tackle challenging subjects. This experience taught me valuable lessons that extend beyond the classroom. I learned the importance of seeking help, collaborating with others, and maintaining a positive attitude in the face of adversity.

Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges I faced in Geometry. They pushed me to grow as a student and as a person. I now approach new challenges with a sense of determination and an understanding that I have the tools to overcome them. This experience has also influenced my interest in pursuing majors like Management, Public Policy, and Social Sciences, as I see the value in problem-solving, critical thinking, and working collaboratively to achieve goals.

As I prepare for college, I carry these lessons with me. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and confident in my ability to navigate the challenges that come my way. Whether I am studying at DePaul University, UMass Amherst, or any of the other schools I am considering, I know that the skills I developed during this challenging academic experience will serve me well.

In conclusion, overcoming the difficulties I faced in Geometry was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It taught me resilience and the power of seeking help from others.
