My Major by Jaidyn - May 2023 Scholarship Essay

Going to college straight after high school, I plan on majoring in Health and Human Sciences to become a NICU nurse. I will be attending Sacramento State and studying to complete my BSN in nursing as well as taking other classes and getting certifications that will help me become an RN NICU nurse.
NICU nursing is considered one of the hardest jobs as a nurse because I will be dealing with sick, unhealthy babies and trying to get them to their best health and continue on with their life healthy with no complications. In order to do this, I will need a lot of determination, compassion, focus, passion, and critical thinking skills. Being a NICU nurse, I will have days where things don’t go as planned, sometimes more of those days than good. And with that being a possibility, I will have to maintain a disciplined and persistent mindset. To become a NICU nurse, you have to have a lot of passion for this job. I know going into college, majoring in nursing as a NICU nurse is the right choice for me because I too was a NICU baby.
Being born at 4 pounds, 6 ounces along with my twin who weighed lower than me, we were in the NICU for weeks. Being kept alive on machines, having to go through surgeries was really scary on my family. But my sister and I were thankfully able to make it through because we had powerful nurses who strived in seeing us get to better health. If it wasn’t for those nurses, the decisions they made and the determination they had, we wouldn’t be here today. Knowing that we had not only our families fighting for our better health, but those nurses as well only makes me want to do the same thing for the future baby patients I will have.
Whether my outcome with each patient comes out positive or negative, I will always have a reason to continue doing what I’m doing because of the connection I have. I decided to major in nursing to become a NICU nurse because I want to give back, I want to give babies the fighting chance that I once had. I will always have something to think back on, something to push me to continue through my nursing career.
