My Challenge by Jaisany - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Jaisany Acosta, and I am a high school senior with a passion for marine biology and sciences. As a Hispanic woman, I have always been driven to excel academically, not only to pursue my dreams but also to set an example for others in my community. One of the most challenging academic experiences I have faced was during my sophomore year, when I struggled with a particularly demanding chemistry class.
Chemistry was a subject that I had always found intriguing, but as the course progressed, I realized that my understanding was not as solid as I had hoped. The concepts were complex, and I found myself spending hours trying to grasp the material. Despite my efforts, my grades were not reflecting the hard work I was putting in. This was a tough pill to swallow, as I had always been a diligent student who took pride in my academic achievements.
The turning point came when I received a particularly low score on a midterm exam. It was a wake-up call that forced me to reevaluate my approach to learning. I realized that I needed to change my study habits and seek additional help if I wanted to succeed. This realization was both humbling and motivating.
The first step I took was to speak with my chemistry teacher. I was nervous about admitting that I was struggling, but I knew it was necessary. My teacher was incredibly supportive and offered to help me during lunch breaks and after school. These one-on-one sessions were invaluable, as they allowed me to ask questions and clarify concepts that I found confusing. My teacher’s encouragement and patience gave me the confidence to tackle the subject with renewed determination.
In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were facing similar challenges. We met twice a week to review notes, work on practice problems, and quiz each other. This collaborative effort not only helped me understand the material better but also made the learning process more enjoyable. We supported each other and celebrated small victories, which made a significant difference in my attitude towards the subject.
Another strategy I adopted was to make use of online resources. I found educational videos and interactive websites that explained chemistry concepts in different ways. These resources provided me with alternative explanations that sometimes made more sense than the textbook. I also began to create flashcards for key terms and formulas, which helped reinforce my memory and understanding.
Time management became crucial during this period. Balancing my chemistry studies with other subjects and extracurricular activities was challenging, but I learned to prioritize my tasks and set realistic goals. I created a study schedule that allowed me to focus on chemistry without neglecting other responsibilities. This discipline not only improved my performance in chemistry but also enhanced my overall academic skills.
As the semester progressed, I noticed a significant improvement in my understanding and my grades. The hard work and dedication were paying off, and I felt a sense of accomplishment that was incredibly rewarding. By the end of the year, I had not only passed the class but had developed a deeper appreciation for chemistry and its relevance to marine biology.
This experience taught me several valuable lessons. I learned the importance of perseverance and the willingness to seek help when needed. I discovered that collaboration with peers can be a powerful tool for learning. Most importantly, I realized that challenges are opportunities for growth and that overcoming them builds resilience.
As I prepare for college and a career in marine biology, I know that I will encounter many more challenges. However, I am confident that the skills and mindset I developed during this experience will serve me well. I am committed to continuing my education and pursuing my passion for the sciences, knowing that I have the determination and resources to overcome any obstacles that come my way.
In conclusion, facing academic challenges is an inevitable part of the learning journey. My experience with chemistry taught me that with the right approach and support, it is possible to overcome difficulties and achieve success. I am grateful for the lessons I learned and the growth I experienced, and I am excited to apply these lessons to future challenges in my academic and professional life.
