Flight or Fight by Jaleene - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

When you first start college, you're not completely on your own just yet. You still have some guidance from your parents and respected adults. Once you graduate High School it's your turn to spread your wings and fly but not before you have failed a few times. Leadership skills are traits that are learned over time. Leadership skills like independence, prioritizing, and organization helps you exceed in the next chapter of your life but are not necessary to automatically have prior to college. For example, I juggle school, work, and a life. Once upon a time my parents would schedule my doctor visits or do my oil changes for me but they are not here to help me make time for anything now that I'm much older so it's up to me to take complete control and responsibility in order to maintain a life for myself.

College is kind of like the stepping stone to what the working world is really like. Just like students work really hard all semester to ace the final exam, they'll work really hard again in their careers for a promotion. Learning leadership skills early can be beneficial but learning them in college is not a bad start. In college you're faced with many decisons to make from what classes to take to whom to make friends with and even down to where to sit in the cafeteria. With decisions come choices and thats where the leadership skills come to play. Like I stated earlier, leadership skills are traits learned and college is the perfect place to learn them because in college you only have two options: flight or fight.
