College Eye Openers by James - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My first semester at Alabama A&M University was an eye-opening experience that challenged me in ways I had not anticipated. As a first-time college student, I was excited but also a bit nervous about what lay ahead. I knew college would be different from high school, but I underestimated just how different it would be. The academic environment was more demanding, and the expectations were much higher. This was especially true in my chemistry class, which turned out to be one of the most challenging experiences I have faced so far.
Chemistry was a subject I was interested in, but I quickly realized that my high school background had not fully prepared me for the level of depth and complexity I encountered in college. The lectures were fast-paced, and the material was dense. I struggled to keep up with the concepts, and my grades reflected this struggle. After receiving a disappointing grade on my first exam, I realized that I needed to make some changes if I wanted to succeed.
The first step I took was to assess my study habits. In high school, I could get by with minimal studying, but college required a different approach. I started by organizing my time better, setting aside specific hours each day dedicated to chemistry. I also began attending every office hour offered by my professor. These sessions were invaluable because they allowed me to ask questions and get clarification on topics I found confusing. My professor was patient and willing to help, which made a big difference.
Additionally, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also finding the course challenging. We met twice a week to review notes, discuss difficult concepts, and quiz each other. This collaborative environment helped me see different perspectives and approaches to solving problems. Explaining concepts to others also reinforced my own understanding.
I also took advantage of the tutoring services offered by the university. The tutors provided additional explanations and practice problems, which were crucial for my understanding of the subject. They helped me develop strategies for tackling complex problems and taught me how to approach exams more effectively.
Despite my efforts, I continued to struggle with some of the more advanced topics. This was frustrating, but I learned to be patient with myself. I realized that learning is a process, and it is okay to not understand everything immediately. What mattered was my willingness to keep trying and to seek help when needed.
Over time, my hard work began to pay off. My grades improved, and I gained more confidence in my abilities. I learned that perseverance and a willingness to adapt are key to overcoming academic challenges. This experience taught me the importance of asking for help and utilizing all available resources. It also showed me the value of collaboration and the power of a supportive community.
Although my GPA is currently 2.8, which is not as high as I would like, I am proud of the progress I have made. I am committed to continuing to improve and to making the most of my education. This experience has taught me resilience and the importance of a growth mindset. I know that I have the ability to overcome challenges and succeed, both academically and in life.
In conclusion, my challenging experience with chemistry has been a significant learning opportunity. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to develop new skills and strategies. By seeking help, collaborating with peers, and dedicating myself to my studies, I was able to overcome the difficulties I faced. This experience has not only made me a better student but also a more determined and resourceful person. I am grateful for the lessons I have learned and look forward to applying them as I continue my college journey.
