My journey by Jasmin - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My journey into the world of nursing began with a challenging academic experience that tested my resolve and determination. As a first-time college student at Long Beach City College, I was both excited and nervous about starting my path toward becoming a nurse. However, the excitement quickly turned into a challenge when I faced my first major hurdle: Anatomy and Physiology.

Anatomy and Physiology is a foundational course for nursing students, and I knew it was crucial for my success in the program. The sheer volume of information was overwhelming. The course required memorizing countless terms, understanding complex systems, and applying this knowledge in practical ways. I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the class. The first exam was a wake-up call; I did not do as well as I had hoped, and I realized I needed to change my approach.

Determined not to let this setback define my path, I took a step back to assess my study habits and strategies. I realized that my high school study techniques were not sufficient for college-level coursework, especially in a demanding field like nursing. I needed to develop new skills and find resources that would help me succeed.

The first step I took was to reach out for help. I began attending study groups organized by my classmates. These sessions were invaluable because they allowed me to discuss difficult concepts with peers who were also trying to grasp the material. Explaining ideas to each other helped solidify our understanding. Moreover, I discovered that I was not alone in my struggles, which was comforting and motivating.

In addition to study groups, I sought help from my professors during office hours. Initially, I was hesitant to ask for help, fearing it would make me appear incapable. However, I quickly learned that professors are there to support students, and they appreciated my willingness to seek guidance. They provided me with additional resources, such as recommended readings and practice problems, which were instrumental in improving my comprehension of the subject.

I also explored different study techniques to find what worked best for me. I started using flashcards for memorization, which helped me retain complex terminology. I incorporated visual aids, such as diagrams and videos, to better understand the physiological processes. I also practiced active learning by teaching back the material to myself or others, which reinforced my understanding.

Time management became another crucial aspect of overcoming this academic challenge. With multiple courses demanding my attention, I had to learn how to prioritize tasks and allocate sufficient time for each subject. I created a study schedule that balanced my coursework, study sessions, and personal time. This disciplined approach helped me stay organized and reduced the stress of last-minute cramming.

As the semester progressed, I noticed a significant improvement in my performance. My grades gradually improved, and I felt more confident in my ability to tackle challenging material. By the end of the course, I had not only passed Anatomy and Physiology but had also developed a strong foundation that would support me in future nursing courses.

Overcoming this challenge taught me valuable lessons that extend beyond academics. I learned the importance of perseverance and adaptability. Challenges are inevitable, but how we respond to them defines our success. I realized that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness, and that collaboration with others can lead to shared success.

This experience also reinforced my passion for nursing. Despite the difficulties, I remained committed to my goal of becoming a nurse because I am driven by the desire to help others and make a positive impact in the world. The struggles I faced in Anatomy and Physiology prepared me for the rigorous journey ahead and strengthened my resolve to overcome future obstacles.

In conclusion, the challenging academic experience of Anatomy and Physiology was a pivotal moment in my college journey. It taught me essential skills, such as effective study techniques, time management, and the importance of seeking help. More importantly, it reaffirmed my dedication to pursuing a career in nursing. I am grateful for the lessons learned and am confident that they will serve me well as I continue my education and eventually enter the nursing profession.
