Incoming Freshmen by Jasmine - March 2019 Scholarship Essay
High School is a point in a teenagers life where they will spend grades 9-12 getting an education, meeting new people, facing new challenges, and preparing for their future life after high school. In these four years students will be building their character and qualities which they will then use in the world. One important piece of advice to give to the incoming freshmen class would be to be your own person. Being your own person throughout high school has an impact on your behavior, makes you less likely to fall under peer pressure, and allows you to connect better with others.
Being yourself is very important when it comes to behavior. In high school you have a student record which colleges are able to look at and view your behavior. This way you should behave in the best way you can rather than acting as someone you are not. At the end of the day colleges and jobs will view your behavior and can decide if they would want to accept you or not. For instance, receiving referrals or rights ups will make colleges and jobs think that you have a behavior problem. Your behavior is a key component of how people will also treat you and so you should always be your own original self. Pretending to be someone else is easy to see and it may change your usual form of behavior when in certain environments.
One thing that could get in the way of being yourself would be peer pressure. Peer pressure is the influence that a friend or group of friends may have on someone. Hanging with the wrong crowd can effect your performance in high school because it is likely you could be put under peer pressure to do certain activities. This then changes your character which then effects the goal of being yourself. Peer pressure is a very common thing throughout high school where it can lead to trying or doing unfamiliar things. For instance, drugs, changing yourself to fit in, fighting, behavioral changes, and etc. Don’t get mixed in with the wrong crowd because at the end of the day how you act is what matters the most. Being your own person will keep you from loosing yourself and becoming someone that you are not.
One way you can continue to be your own person is by becoming associated with people who have similar characteristics, interests, and goals like you. When surrounded by people who have similarities to you makes it easier to be yourself and be more comfortable. It makes you feel more accepted and welcome rather than having to hide your true self. Also joining clubs will cause you to be more open and accepted by others in your club. It is a great way to make friends and once you make these friends you will be more comfortable with being your own person.
High school is full of many things and for many incoming freshmen, high school may seem to be scary and a difficult change to adjust to. One piece of advice that can be given to incoming freshmen would be to be yourself. Being yourself could go a long way throughout high school and would stray you away from falling under the influence of peer pressure. Being your own person shows your character behavior wise and allows you to find people with the same similarities compared to you. Being your own person is a very important piece of advice that incoming freshmen should be aware of when entering high school and continue to do throughout all their four years.
