Changes I Wish to See in Education by Jaylen - September 2025 Scholarship Essay

There are many changes that I would like to see within the next ten years, but the three that I think are the most impactful would be an increase in funding, adaptability to students' needs, and strict use of a teaching curriculum that is multi-perspective and unbiased.

Firstly, I think that the funding towards education should be increased so that more schools can offer a variety of classes, such as home economics and financial literacy, which can help prepare students for the "real world" or adulthood. Additionally, this funding can be used to help repair or remodel schools in poor condition, provide new sports and computer equipment, and assist in providing students with school supplies. An increase in funding will also allow schools to bring in and/or maintain better-quality teachers, which will improve academic performance. Overall, an increase in financing can improve student outcomes, such as graduation and college attendance rates, academic performance, and job potential for students.

An increase in funding for schools leads to the next change I wish to see: adaptability to students' needs. I believe that one of the many reasons students struggle in school is due to schools failing to adapt to the needs of students, and one of the reasons they struggle to adapt is due to their available funding. An example of a way a school can use its funding to adapt to students' needs is by offering smaller class sizes, something that many students and I prefer, as it allows for more one-on-one time with the teacher. I believe that teaching isn't a one-size-fits-all; everyone learns a bit differently from one another, so I think that it wouldn't be right for schools to only offer one style of education, and should instead tweak it a bit to allow for flexibility and options amongst students. A personal experience of how adaptability can affect a student's academic success was during my eighth-grade year, when my pre-algebra teacher noticed that some of the students in the class scored better on topics that he worked one-on-one with them on. Noticing the difference, he adapted his teaching so that students who preferred to work alone had the option to, and those who liked to work with others had the option to form study groups, and anyone who would like to spend one-on-one time with the teacher during class to discuss topics had the option to do so.

Finally, an unbiased teaching curriculum is essential. Having an unbiased curriculum creates an accurate understanding, fosters critical thinking, and prepares students to actively fight against prejudice and injustice in society. Additionally, an unbiased curriculum avoids stereotypes and misrepresentation and instead encourages inclusive environments where students respect each other, feel valued, and can grow to reach their potential. Having this type of teaching will prevent students from becoming close-minded and instead take the time to view situations from multiple perspectives to understand others' experiences or opinions.

In summary, within the next 10 years, I would like to see schools receive an increase in funding, adapt to students' needs, and strictly use a curriculum that is unbiased and encourages students to have an open mind and view things from multiple perspectives. I believe these changes will dramatically improve students' outcomes, understanding of society, and their interactions with others.
