by Jenard - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Every student faces challenges during their academic journey, and I am no exception. As a high school senior with a keen interest in computer engineering and cybersecurity, I have encountered my fair share of obstacles. One particular experience that stands out is when I struggled with a challenging computer science class during my junior year. This experience tested my resilience and determination, and ultimately, it helped me grow both academically and personally.

At the start of my junior year, I was excited to enroll in an advanced computer science class. I have always been fascinated by technology and how it can be used to solve complex problems, so I thought this class would be a perfect fit for me. However, as the semester progressed, I quickly realized that I was in over my head. The coursework was much more difficult than I had anticipated, and I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the class.

The concepts were complex, and I often felt lost during lectures. My grades started to slip, and I became frustrated and discouraged. I remember receiving a particularly low score on a major project, and it felt like a punch to the gut. I began to doubt my abilities and questioned whether I was cut out for a future in computer engineering and cybersecurity. It was a tough period, and I knew I had to make a change if I wanted to succeed.

Instead of giving up, I decided to tackle the problem head-on. I knew that I needed to improve my understanding of the material, so I started by seeking help. I reached out to my teacher and asked for guidance on how to better grasp the concepts. She was incredibly supportive and provided me with additional resources and practice problems to work on. This extra help made a significant difference, and I began to feel more confident in my abilities.

I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were also struggling. We met regularly to review the material, discuss challenging topics, and help each other with assignments. Working with my peers provided me with different perspectives on the material and allowed us to learn from each other. This collaborative approach not only improved my understanding but also made the learning process more enjoyable.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher and peers, I dedicated more time to studying outside of class. I created a study schedule that allowed me to focus on the areas where I needed the most improvement. I watched online tutorials, read supplementary materials, and practiced coding exercises to reinforce my understanding of the concepts. This consistent effort paid off, and I began to see improvements in my grades.

Through hard work and perseverance, I was able to overcome the challenges I faced in my computer science class. By the end of the semester, my grades had improved significantly, and I had regained my confidence. This experience taught me the importance of resilience and the value of seeking help when needed. It also reinforced my passion for computer engineering and cybersecurity, as I realized that overcoming challenges is a part of the learning process in these fields.

Looking back, I am grateful for the difficulties I faced in that class because they helped me develop important skills that I will carry with me into college and beyond. I learned how to manage my time effectively, collaborate with others, and approach problems with a positive attitude. These skills will be invaluable as I pursue a degree in computer engineering and cybersecurity at Oakland University.

As a Black man, I understand that I may face additional challenges in my academic and professional journey. However, I am committed to pushing through these obstacles and achieving my goals. I am determined to contribute to the field of technology and make a positive impact in my community. This scholarship would provide me with the financial support I need to pursue my education and continue striving for success.

In conclusion, the challenging experience I faced in my computer science class taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, collaboration, and resilience. By seeking help, working with my peers, and dedicating myself to improving, I was able to overcome the obstacles in my path. I am eager to apply these lessons as I continue my academic journey at Oakland University and work towards a career in computer engineering and cybersecurity. Thank you for considering my application for this scholarship.
