Summer Camp by Jenna - January 2017 Scholarship Essay
I volunteered as a Teen Leader at the Windham Tolland 4H camp this past summer. I spent 8 weeks of my summer dedicated to volunteering. Being a Teen Leader gave me a lot of responsibilities. I was expected to arrive on time and was given specific tasks that I had to complete in the allotted time.I was also responsible for making sure each child was safe and accounted for.Through this experience I feel I improved my communication skills as well. It was my job to help the children stay focused on activities and make sure they exhibited proper behavior.
You would think that community service as being somewhat of a pain. I'm not talking about community service you are required to do if you are in trouble, but rather the community service you do out of the goodness of your heart. To me volunteering was truly a learning experience. It was amazing to see how well children of different races and ethnic cultures cooperated, shared, and cared for each other. Community service is a very satisfying experience. It makes you feel good about yourself knowing that you are doing good for others. I would encourage everyone to serve their community in some way-you will feel better about yourself.
