A challenging moment by Jeremiah - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my high school journey at Noble & Greenough School, a defining academic challenge was my sophomore year chemistry class. Science had never been my favorite field as I love the humanities, however, I was dedicated to receiving a good grade for chemistry. The complexity of balancing equations and understanding molecular structures was daunting, and my confidence dropped when I received a low grade on my first test.
This experience was humbling but sparked determination in me. I realized my usual study habits were not enough and needed a new approach. Feeling overwhelmed, I was hopeful that with effort, I could improve.
First, I reached out to my teacher, overcoming my hesitation to ask for help. My teacher was supportive and explained concepts clearly, suggesting online tutorials and practice problems that were very helpful.
Next, I formed a study group with classmates, which allowed me to see different perspectives and solve problems collaboratively. These sessions made learning more engaging and less isolating.
I developed better study habits, organizing my notes and creating a study schedule for consistent review rather than cramming. Breaking down complex topics into smaller parts made them easier to understand.
Through this process, I learned resilience and persistence. Progress felt slow at times, but I kept pushing forward. My grades improved, and my confidence grew. This experience taught me that setbacks are opportunities to learn.
Overcoming this challenge sparked my interest in understanding how people think and learn, which is why I am interested in psychology. I became fascinated by cognitive processes behind learning, influencing my academic interests and aspirations.
Reflecting on this, I am grateful for the lessons it taught me: the value of seeking help, the power of collaboration, and the importance of perseverance. These lessons apply not only in academics but in all areas of life.
As I look ahead to college, whether at UPenn, UNC Chapel Hill, UMass Amherst, or another university, I know challenges will arise. I am confident in facing them with the skills and mindset developed during that pivotal year in chemistry.
In conclusion, the challenge in chemistry taught me about resilience, collaboration, and seeking help. It improved my academic performance and shaped my approach to learning and problem-solving. I am eager to apply these lessons in psychology, law, or criminal justice and am committed to using my education to positively impact my community. With hope and determination, I look forward to embracing the future and its possibilities.
