Change Is Good! by Jesse - July 2022 Scholarship Essay

Everything in life is constantly changing. Change is good. Change leads to new ideas, discoveries, and innovation. Change moves us forward. I feel education today needs change. I hope to see change in our education system over the next 10 years. The main change I would love to see is how learning is taught. I would love for teacher's to require less regurgitation of facts and information and have more discussions. I think student's learn better by having discussions rather than memorizing facts that they are going to forget shortly afterwards. Discussions force people to think. Their mind reasons and is able to brainstorm to come up with new ideas and thoughts. Discussions also force people into conversations with others. We are so used to texting or email someone, it would be nice to have face-to-face interactions with people. When you are having a face-to-face discussion you are able to see a person's facial expressions and read their body language. I don't remember the answers to the tests I took in high school, but I sure remember the discussions we had! Especially in my bioethics class. I really enjoyed it and will use the things I learned from our discussions in class for a long time.
Another change I would love to see in education is less classroom and more hands-on learning. Whether it be getting outside to learn, or using a lab more or getting out in to the community more. I would love to see less lectures and more student involvement. More interactive learning. The student's actually DOING something rather than just listening to a professor speak. Even when the topic interests me, sometimes my mind wonders when I am just listening to one of my teacher's speak. I would love to experience what he was talking about instead of just hearing about it. I think just getting outside in some fresh air is good too. It's a lot easier to listen to someone talk when you are in the sunshine hearing birds sing. It makes learning a better experience.
In conclusion, I feel education will change a lot over the next 10 years. Hopefully it will change for the better. Changing the way learning is taught and having more hands-on, interactive learning is a step in the right direction!!
