Life as a young Immigrant: Finding a way by Jesus - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

Moving into the United States, or any other country for that matter, after having lived your whole life somewhere else, leaving friends, family, and the world as you have known it, is tough. Most people, myself included, are aware of the difficulty of this task, and so have the foresight of the things to come before actually getting to it. But when the time comes, and you live the process, you get all sorts of frustrations.

However, these obstacles are what make the whole process very, very exciting. We can only enjoy true success after having struggled, and as one who is technically not successful yet, i can foresee that things can only get better. Why? Because if we recognize we can do better and actually strive to do just that, then eventually we will achieve our goals. We have to fight for what we believe in, build ourselves to be better each day and moment, be it at a work, personal or academic environment.

The key to finding your way is having goals, plans and act upon these. We may fail at times, but that can only make us better. If you want to get an education, go for it, and foresee the issues already faced by many. Strive for excellence and readiness. Get a job, save money, apply for scholarships or any kind of aids accessible. Manage your money, time and most importantly, your life; don't just live your whole life as a means to an end, as that is, sadly, how many people live these days. Take a walk, read a book, talking meaningfully with somebody, reflect, stop trying to rush to friday when you can make monday, tuesday, wednesday and thursday great. Get involved with jobs and activities that you at least like a little, so as not to just "sell your life for money" but learn and grow both economically and personally in everything you do.

For my fellow immigrants, especially us Hispanics, i encourage you to be daring. Meet new cultures and learn different perspectives to broad up our overall world view. Do not settle and always be hungry for growth and success, not just food on the table. Don't put yourself down, but at the same time be humble and believe that there is always something that we can improve in order to better our lives. I say this not as an expert, because I'm fairly new myself and still struggling, but i say it as an idealist, who's looking forward to inspire others, so as to inspire myself as well.
