Title: Embracing Challenges: My Journey Through Business Administration by Johnmark - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a freshman at the University of Maryland Global Campus, majoring in Business Administration, I have already faced my fair share of academic challenges. One experience that stands out is my struggle with the introductory accounting course. Coming into college, I knew that business administration would involve a lot of numbers, but I did not expect accounting to be as complex as it turned out to be. This course was my first real test in college, and it taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, resourcefulness, and growth.

In high school, math had always been one of my stronger subjects, so I assumed that accounting would come naturally to me. However, I quickly realized that accounting was not just about numbers; it was about understanding a whole new language of financial statements, ledgers, and concepts that were foreign to me. The pace of the class was fast, and I found myself struggling to keep up with the material. My first exam was a wake-up call. I did not do as well as I had hoped, and it shook my confidence.

Determined not to let this setback define my college experience, I knew I had to find a way to overcome this challenge. The first step was acknowledging that I needed help. I reached out to my professor during office hours, which was intimidating at first. I was worried about admitting that I was struggling, but I quickly learned that my professor was there to help. He provided clarity on topics I found confusing and offered additional resources for practice.

In addition to seeking help from my professor, I also formed a study group with some classmates. This was a game-changer for me. We met regularly to review material, work through problems, and quiz each other. Explaining concepts to others helped reinforce my understanding, and hearing different perspectives gave me new insights. The support of my peers made the learning process less daunting and more collaborative.

Another strategy that helped me was utilizing online resources. I found several websites and video tutorials that explained accounting concepts in ways that were easier for me to grasp. These resources allowed me to learn at my own pace and revisit topics as many times as I needed. By combining these online tools with my class materials, I was able to build a more comprehensive understanding of the subject.

Time management also played a crucial role in overcoming this challenge. I realized that I needed to dedicate more time to studying accounting than I initially anticipated. I created a study schedule that allocated specific times each week to focus solely on accounting. This routine helped me stay organized and ensured that I was consistently reviewing the material rather than cramming before exams.

Throughout this experience, I learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. I had to let go of the notion that I would immediately excel at everything I attempted. Instead, I embraced the idea that struggles are a natural part of the learning process and that they can lead to growth if approached with the right mindset. This shift in perspective allowed me to view challenges as opportunities to develop new skills and strengthen my resolve.

By the end of the semester, my hard work paid off. My grades improved significantly, and I gained a newfound confidence in my ability to tackle difficult subjects. More importantly, I developed a deeper appreciation for the field of business administration and its complexities. This experience taught me that success is not just about innate ability but also about perseverance, collaboration, and the willingness to seek help when needed.

As a Black man pursuing a degree in business administration, I am aware of the importance of representation and the impact it can have on future generations. Overcoming this academic challenge has strengthened my commitment to my studies and my desire to contribute positively to the business world. I hope to inspire others who may face similar struggles, showing them that with determination and the right support, they too can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

In conclusion, my experience with the introductory accounting course was a defining moment in my college journey. It challenged me in ways I had not anticipated, but it also equipped me with valuable skills and insights that will serve me well throughout my academic and professional career. I am grateful for the lessons I learned and the support I received along the way. This experience has reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance and the importance of embracing challenges as stepping stones to success.
