Learn to Love to Teach by Jonathon - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

The most important lesson that I have learned from a teacher is that “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” This statement has been proven true by many teachers on both sides of the spectrum; people that enjoy teaching carry out their tasks well, however, those who do not like their jobs tend to perform more poorly. There are a number of aspects of people’s lives that contribute to how they conduct themselves. For example: A teacher must love everything they to do be effective in their career as well as enjoy it.

First of all, teachers need to love what they teach. People who are indifferent to the subject they teach are likely to just go to work, lecture the class a bit, give some bookwork or an exam, then go home. On the other hand, if the teachers are interested and enthusiastic about their subjects, this may influence their pupils to become interested as well.

This brings us to the students; teachers must also love their students. If teachers like what they teach, but cannot stand to be around teenagers, the task of teaching at a High School becomes much more tedious. One way teachers may show they care is by mentoring; sometimes engaging individually with a student allows for instruction directed toward their specific needs . Teachers can inspire curiosity the in the minds of those they teach causing the students to want to learn more; the more knowledge they have, the more prepared for the lives ahead of them.

Most importantly, teachers have got to love their life. The majority of what teachers “do” is outside of school. They have families and friends of their own, and what happens away from campus can be brought into the classroom. It is imperative that teachers enjoy their private lives because otherwise, their professional lives may be negatively affected; interactions with colleagues may be impaired, the teachers cannot teach as well, and consequentially the students will not learn as much.

This is an example of just one occupation that requires love of work. Throughout my time as a student, I have learned that whether you are a fry cook, or a conglomerate CEO, if you love doing it, you will never truly work a day in your life.
