The Streak by Jordan - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
I have experienced many great triumphs in my life, but one moment in particular stands out. On the night of October 7, 2016, the Lisbon Bronco football team won its first game in nearly three years. This night was something special for everybody involved. The road that led up to this moment has positively affected my life in so many ways.
It was my senior year and we inherited a 19 game losing streak. For over two years, the seniors had watched the losses pile up. We made a commitment to ourselves that we would not go out without a win. During the off season, my teammates and I spent hours on end lifting weights and watching film. As a captain, I tried to be the best leader possible on and off the field. I helped people in the classroom and encouraged people to get in the weight room.
As a senior, it marked my third year starting at linebacker and second at quarterback. Our coaches praised that we would have to fight through adversity to our first win. We lost the first six games and several key players due to injury. We overcame that adversity and beat Enderlin by a score of 25-6 and I sealed the game with an interception. This was the last game ever played at Sandager Park because Lisbon gets a new field next year. To break the streak on the same field that our fathers played on was truly something special.
I know winning a football game doesn’t seem like much, but I learned so many valuable lessons during this journey. That game was a reward for all of the hard work, dedication, and time the team put in. For the rest of our lives, my teammates and I will remember that we were the ones to break the streak and that is why it is my greatest accomplishment.
