Future Dentist by Joy - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, I always knew I wanted to make a difference in people's lives, and dentistry seemed like the perfect path for me. However, my journey towards this dream has not always been smooth. One of the most challenging academic experiences I faced occurred during my sophomore year at Charles Herbert Flowers High School when I was taking an advanced biology course. This class was crucial for my future in dentistry, but it turned out to be much more difficult than I had anticipated.

Biology had always fascinated me, especially the topics related to human anatomy and health. I was excited to dive deeper into these subjects, but as the semester progressed, I found myself struggling to keep up with the complex material and fast-paced lectures. My grades started slipping, and I began to doubt my abilities. I felt overwhelmed and anxious, worried that I might not be able to pursue my dream of becoming a dentist if I could not handle this class.

The turning point came when I received a particularly low score on a major exam. I knew I had to make a change if I wanted to turn things around. First, I reached out to my teacher for help. I was nervous about admitting that I was struggling, but my teacher was understanding and supportive. She helped me identify the areas where I was having the most trouble and suggested some additional resources that could aid my understanding.

I also realized that I needed to improve my study habits. Up until that point, I had been trying to memorize information without truly understanding it. I started to approach my studies more strategically. I created a study schedule that allowed me to review material regularly rather than cramming before exams. I also began to form study groups with classmates, which helped me gain different perspectives on the material and learn from others.

Another key factor in overcoming this challenge was learning to manage my time better. Balancing schoolwork with extracurricular activities and responsibilities at home was not easy, but I knew it was necessary. I started using a planner to keep track of assignments and deadlines, which helped me prioritize tasks and avoid last-minute stress.

Gradually, my hard work began to pay off. I started to see improvements in my grades, and more importantly, I gained a deeper understanding of the subject. This experience taught me the value of perseverance and the importance of seeking help when needed. It also reinforced my passion for dentistry, as I realized that overcoming obstacles is a part of any worthwhile journey.

Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the lessons I learned. It has prepared me for the challenges I will face in college and beyond, especially as I pursue a major in dentistry. I am excited about the opportunity to attend a university like Delaware State University, Morgan State University, or one of the other great schools I am considering. I know that these institutions will provide me with the education and support I need to achieve my goals.

As a Black woman aspiring to enter the field of dentistry, I am aware of the challenges that lie ahead, but I am ready to face them head-on. My experience in biology has taught me that challenges are not roadblocks but opportunities to grow and learn. I am committed to working hard and persevering through any obstacles that come my way.

In conclusion, the challenging academic experience I faced in my sophomore biology class taught me valuable lessons about resilience, time management, and the importance of seeking support. It strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in dentistry and prepared me for the academic challenges I will encounter in college. I am confident that with determination and the right support, I can achieve my dreams and make a positive impact in the world through dentistry.
