More Than a Teacher by Joy - January 2025 Scholarship Essay

Mrs. Prichard, or KP as most call her, has had a huge impact on my life. She’s not only a great teacher but also an amazing powerlifting coach and mentor. Her constant support and care have helped me grow as a person, both in and out of school. One thing that makes KP stand out is how much she cares about her students. She’s the type of teacher who notices when someone is having a bad day and goes out of her way to check in on them. It’s really comforting to know there’s an adult I can trust and talk to whenever I need help or advice. She always makes me feel valued and supported, which is something not every teacher does.
As my powerlifting coach, KP has taught me so much more than just how to lift weights. She’s shown me how to be mentally strong and push through tough situations. Powerlifting can be really challenging, but KP is always there to encourage me and remind me that I’m capable of more than I think. Her positivity and belief in me make me want to work harder and do my best, even when things get difficult. What I admire most about KP is how she balances being a teacher and coach, as well as having other jobs. She creates a space where I feel comfortable being myself, all while having so much on her plate, which I don’t think a lot of people recognize. Knowing that I have someone like her to turn to has helped me handle challenges with more confidence. She’s not just someone who tells me what to do-- she’s someone who genuinely cares about my success and well being.
I’m really grateful to have KP in my life. She’s been more than just a teacher or coach-- she’s been someone I can look up to and learn from. Her support has helped me become a better person, and I know the lessons she’s taught me will stick with me for a long time.
