My English Adjustment by Juliana - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

In my high school journey, I have always strived to excel academically, but like any student, I have faced my fair share of challenges. One particular experience stands out as both a formidable obstacle and a pivotal moment in my academic life. It was during my junior year when I decided to take on AP English Literature, a class known for its rigorous curriculum and demanding workload. As someone who has always been passionate about literature and writing, I was eager to dive into the world of classic novels, poetry, and critical essays. However, I soon realized that my enthusiasm alone would not be enough to carry me through the course.

From the start, the class was intense. The reading list was extensive, the pace was fast, and the expectations were high. I found myself struggling to keep up with the volume of reading assignments while also trying to grasp the complex themes and literary devices we were expected to analyze. It was overwhelming, and I felt like I was constantly falling behind. My confidence took a hit, and I began to doubt my abilities. It was a challenging time, and I knew I had to find a way to overcome it if I wanted to succeed.

The turning point came after I received my first major essay back with a grade that was much lower than I had anticipated. It was a wake-up call, and I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to improve. I started by seeking help from my teacher, who was incredibly supportive and provided valuable feedback on my writing. She encouraged me to focus on developing a deeper understanding of the texts and to work on articulating my thoughts more clearly in my essays.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I also formed a study group with a few classmates. We met regularly to discuss the readings, share insights, and help each other with essay drafts. This collaborative approach not only made the workload more manageable but also allowed me to gain different perspectives on the material. It was through these discussions that I began to see the texts in a new light and develop a more nuanced understanding of the themes and characters.

Another strategy that helped me overcome this academic challenge was improving my time management skills. I created a detailed study schedule that allocated specific times for reading, writing, and reviewing notes. By breaking down the assignments into smaller, manageable tasks, I was able to stay on top of the workload without feeling overwhelmed. This disciplined approach also allowed me to balance my other commitments, such as extracurricular activities and part-time work, without sacrificing my academic performance.

Throughout this experience, I learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. I discovered that setbacks are not failures but opportunities to learn and grow. By seeking help, collaborating with peers, and managing my time effectively, I was able to turn a challenging situation into a valuable learning experience. My efforts paid off, and by the end of the year, I had not only improved my grades but also gained a deeper appreciation for literature and a newfound confidence in my abilities.

This challenging academic experience taught me that perseverance and a willingness to seek help are crucial to overcoming obstacles. It also reinforced my passion for English and solidified my desire to pursue it as a major in college. I am excited about the possibility of attending Grand Canyon University, where I hope to further develop my skills and explore new areas of interest, such as hospitality and management. I believe that the lessons I learned during my AP English Literature class will serve me well in my future studies and career.

In conclusion, overcoming the challenges I faced in AP English Literature was a transformative experience that taught me valuable lessons about resilience, collaboration, and time management. It showed me that with determination and the right support, I can overcome any obstacle and achieve my goals. As I look forward to the next chapter of my academic journey, I am confident that these skills will continue to guide me as I pursue my passions and strive for excellence.
