My Law of Life by Justin - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
The worst part of writing a paper for school is the tedious repetition. I have to spend hours researching and planning with every single essay. This is not writing, it is just a grade. I want to spill my heart onto the paper, not having to worry about a guideline or due date. I want something that I can read again and feel a tear drop falling down my cheek. The only essay that ever accomplished this was called, Laws of Life, an essay that outlined my personal principles. This essay was my proudest work in school because it gave me confidence in my writing skills, was truly genuine, and gave me advice to work towards the future
Ever since I was little, my English skills were not up to par. I struggled with writing specifically, and never got stellar grades on my papers. I never expected to excel in writing, let alone have an essay exhibited as one of the best in the school. However, as my writing skills grew, I decided to enter the Laws of Life contest just to see where I stood with other students. Soon enough, I was sitting in a room of with around ten other winners. Even though I had one of the best essays, I was not delighted with just winning. I was just glad that this essay was written in all sincerity. I did not procrastinate and lie in my essay. This essay, which won a prize, was completely mine, and that is why I am proud of it.
The topic of my essay made me even more appreciative of my work. The most important thing in my life is my family. My parents and brothers are the ones that help guide me through life. They have taught me many skills and lessons to be a strong individual in the world. I have learned just as much from my relatives, especially my grandfather. He was the reason I wrote my paper. Even though he passed away a few years back, my grandfather has taught me the importance of family. My grandfather was the collective one in our family, always bringing the family together in tense situations. As he neared death, my grandpa made me laugh many times, and made my time with him unforgettable. As I said in my paper, “Without the memories of my grandfather, I would never be the man I am today.” I am not just content of this paper as an assignment for school, but I am grateful for my grandfather. He has done so much to impact my life, and the essay I wrote does not give him justice. I know that this essay was my proudest work because I think about it everyday, and how it will affect my future.
My future goals were redirected after writing my Laws of Life essay. At first, I wanted to move out to see the world and escape the stress of my family. I was wrong to think this way, for my family is my life. They are always there for me, and will never think of me differently. In my future, I am going to keep my family near my heart. I will embrace the family hugs and smile through all the embarrassing comments. This essay that I wrote is not my proudest school moment. It is my proudest moment all together so far. As I wrote, I found out who I truly was. I am a family man. I know my family will not last in this world forever, but I am sure they can teach me more about myself just like my grandfather did before.
I have had many proud moments in my life such as soccer achievements and many school accolades, but these are just awards. There is no sentimental value to them, and they will not affect my future in anyway. My Laws of Life essay is personal, and brings meaning to my life and my future. This essay is an expression of who I want to be in the future. My essay will always be one of my proudest moments in school.
