My challenge with "Intro to Animal Science" by Kaitlyn - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

When I first stepped onto the campus of New Mexico State University as a freshman, I was filled with excitement and a bit of nervousness. I had chosen to major in Animal Sciences because of my love for animals and my dream of working in a field where I could make a difference in their lives. However, I soon realized that college would present challenges I had not anticipated, especially in terms of academics. One of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was during my first semester in a course called "Introduction to Animal Science." I had always been passionate about animals, but the depth and breadth of scientific content in this course were overwhelming. The lectures were packed with information about animal biology, genetics, and nutrition, and I quickly found myself struggling to keep up with the pace. The first few weeks were particularly tough. I remember sitting in class, trying to take notes while feeling completely lost. The professor would explain complex concepts that seemed to fly right over my head. I was used to being a good student in high school, so this new feeling of inadequacy was unsettling. My initial strategy was to study harder and longer, but I soon realized that just spending more time with my books was not enough. I needed a new approach. I decided to seek help, which was not easy for me at first. I had always been independent in my studies, but I knew I had to change my mindset to succeed. I started attending the professor's office hours regularly. At first, it was intimidating, but I quickly learned that my professor was approachable and willing to help. She explained difficult concepts in simpler terms and guided me on how to focus my study sessions more effectively. In addition to seeking help from my professor, I also joined a study group with some classmates. This was a game-changer for me. Discussing the material with peers helped me gain different perspectives and understand the content more deeply. We would quiz each other, share notes, and explain topics to one another. This collaborative learning environment made the daunting material more manageable and even enjoyable at times. Another key strategy I adopted was improving my time management skills. Balancing my coursework with other responsibilities was challenging, and I realized that I needed to be more organized. I started using a planner to keep track of assignments, exams, and study sessions. Breaking down larger tasks into smaller, more manageable steps helped me stay on top of my work and reduced my stress levels. As the semester progressed, I noticed a significant improvement in my understanding of the material and my performance in the course. My grades on quizzes and exams started to improve, and I felt more confident participating in class discussions. While I did not become an expert overnight, the combination of seeking help, collaborating with peers, and managing my time effectively made a big difference. Reflecting on this experience, I learned that facing academic challenges is a natural part of the college journey. It taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability. I realized that it is okay to ask for help and that collaboration can lead to success. These lessons have not only helped me in my Animal Sciences courses but have also prepared me to tackle future challenges in my academic and professional life. Moreover, this experience reinforced my passion for Animal Sciences. Despite the initial struggles, I am more determined than ever to pursue a career where I can contribute to the well-being of animals. I am grateful for the challenges I faced because they have made me a stronger and more resourceful student. In conclusion, overcoming the challenges in my "Introduction to Animal Science" course was a pivotal moment in my college journey. It taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, seeking help, and the power of collaboration. These skills will undoubtedly serve me well as I continue my studies and work towards my goal of making a positive impact in the field of animal sciences.
