Freshmen! Join a club! by Kaleb - March 2019 Scholarship Essay
My tour for the freshman class would be quite usual. I'd show them the music rooms, math rooms, gym, cafeteria, etc. The different thing about my tour would be that I would tell the freshman how important it is to find a club to join on the first week of school. I think that is is important to find what motivates you to get up every morning and what gives you passion, and it is easy to find this through joining a club. For me, I joined an A-Capella club my freshman year, and even though I wasn't the best at singing, I learned how to be a good singer and I met some really cool people that I could bond with. One of the scariest things about high school is not knowing people and feeling out of place. It is really easy to feel out of place if all a student does is come to school, goes to classes, and goes home. A student doesn't get much out of high school if they just go with the flow. I would tell them to break that flow and get involve with something that you find interesting. Joining a club like stem, model UN, a sport, art, photography, or anything that catches your eye are all great clubs. Chances are, that you will meet a person in a club you join that is also in some of your classes at school, and it is really helpful to know a friend in each of your classes. From there you can find a passion through that club, join different clubs and expand your horizon, or get involved with your school and have a great high school experience. After I give my tour group this advice, I would end with a bottom line, "Don't be afraid to take a leap and join a club, I promise you, something great will come out of it."
