Fashion Is Not Just Clothes by Kamillah - September 2019 Scholarship Essay

In today's society, many people pride themselves on being fashionable and knowing the latest trends, but in reality, people just tend to wear what they see everyone else wear because it's the norm. What they don't know is that so much more goes into fashion than what we think. If I could create a high school extracurricular activity, it would be a fashion club. As cliche as it might sound, fashion isn't about what all you wear, but the creative process that you go through to get there.
Fashion is not just clothes. Fashion is art and that's what I think would be an interesting activity to talk about. For instance, there's an event called the Met Gala, which is the biggest fashion event in the industry and is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art located in New York. There are fashion statements made on that carpet and even pure art that cannot be seen anywhere else. I have such a deep passion for fashion that being able to share it with my peers around me brings joy to my heart. Not only would it be something that makes me excited and even more passionate, but it would also be fulfilling to know that I am able to help other people see what I see and feel the things I feel when I discuss any and all things fashion.
I do believe that people, especially high school students would be much more interested in learning about fashion, if they knew more about it and why fashion is the way it is. Behind every piece of clothing and every collection that's put out on a runway or the specific type of model that's used, there is always a story being told, even in the smallest parts that no one seems to think about. Most, if not all high school students want and yearn to be expressive, so if they knew just how expressive the true depths of fashion are, they be much more obligated to join something that makes room for them no matter who they are and what they believe.
