My American angel by Karla - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
In my earlier years, the notion of becoming an astronaut held a strong appeal; in the eighth grade during my first physics class a profound interest and a subsequent desire to pursue studies in physics. While the genesis of my interest in psychology remains elusive in my memory, the decision to pursue it as a field of study solidified in my mind. Upon sharing this ambition with my mother, her response reflected the prevailing societal sentiment in Mexico regarding the viability of careers in psychology, expressing concerns about the perceived lack of demand for psychological help, implying potential challenges in sustaining a career in the field. Consequently, the pursuit of a psychology degree in Mexico appeared to be a formidable aspiration, one that seemed improbable to materialize.
Fortuitously, a significant turning point in my life happened the summer of my junior year. My mother’s marriage presented a remarkable opportunity. Consequently, in October 2017, towards the end of my first semester as a junior, we relocated to the U.S. On my second day on U.S. soil, I started my academic journey. Throughout my life, an unwavering passion for school and academics has defined my pursuits, I have consistently found joy in the realm of education. While acknowledging variances in educational structures, I cannot overstate the fulfillment derived from realizing my aspirations in the U.S. -an achievement that epitomizes the realization of my American dream.
While I deeply cherished the opportunities that my immigrant experience brought, it was not without its formidable challenges. My unfamiliarity with the language and my lack of cultural understanding posed significant barriers to social integration. Adding to this, my assigned high school counselor did not speak nor understand Spanish. Attempts to engage in academic discussions resulted in silent smiles. Unfortunately, I found myself enrolled in courses that were incongruent with my academic need, leading to a letter signaling potential delays in my graduation. Determined to chart a more favorable course, I sought the guidance of a school counselor fluent in Spanish. This decision marked the inception of an encounter with an individual, forever altering a trajectory in my life.
Allow me to introduce Monica Lomeli, a sociologist with a master’s degree in school counseling. Stepping into her office for the first time, I immediately sensed a warm and inclusive atmosphere. Her ability to cultivate a sense of belonging and belief in my potential within the school system was instrumental. She played a pivotal role in realigning my academic trajectory, addressing the challenges I faced with precision and determination. Her support extended beyond academic advice; she became a confidante and mentor. Observing her work, I became inspired to pursue a career in school counseling. Witnessing her transformative impact, I developed a profound desire to emulate her positive influence on others. My aspiration is to be a beacon of guidance, employing kindness and empathy to assist those who, like myself, may feel adrift, helping them discover their path and achieve their goals.
