Ambition and Effort by Karris - December 2018 Scholarship Essay
In order to be awarded a Nobel prize, I believe that one must possess ambitions to improve the world they live in for others, and they must show grit and hard work towards reaching their status. These qualities show how much someone truly cares about making a change.
Ambition is an excellent quality because it pushes us to do more with ourselves and improve ourselves. It especially shows one's perseverance when they face discouragement saying they "can't" or that they "don't need to" accomplish their goals. In order to be awarded the Nobel prize, I would require the recipients to possess an ambition towards a goal that helps others. Not only does their ambition show grit, but their persistence to work hard for no personal benefit is a quality that needs to be recognized and appreciated.
While we often see celebrities and wealthy members of society applauded for donating or visiting the less fortunate, I believe that selflessness should be recognized more in those who had to work hard to reach a status in which they could give, rather than giving without having to sacrifice much effort. The Nobel prize should go to those who had to push through tribulations in order to reach their success. For example, while a wealthy philanthropist may be doing good by donating to various charities, the money isn't of as much value to them as someone who worked hard to raise that money for charity. The value of giving should be placed on how much is put in, not just the material value itself.
In conclusion, I would require a recipient of the Nobel prize to apply ambition and effort toward helping others.
