Mizzou - Health Sciences by Kate - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

I have always been fascinated by the human body and the way it functions. As a child, I spent countless hours pouring over biology books and medical documentaries, trying to understand the complex processes that enable us to survive and thrive. This fascination only grew as I got older, and I found myself drawn to the field of health sciences.

One personal experience that solidified my decision to pursue a major in health sciences was when my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. I was quite young at the time, but I witnessed firsthand the impact that her illness had on her physical and emotional well-being. Through this experience, I developed a deep admiration for the healthcare professionals who worked tirelessly to support and care for her. It was during this time that I realized the profound impact that healthcare professionals have on the lives of their patients, and I knew that I wanted to be a part of that.

Additionally, as someone who has always been passionate about helping others, I found that studying health sciences would provide me with the knowledge and skills needed to make a meaningful difference in people's lives. I believe that by gaining a comprehensive understanding of the human body and healthcare systems, I can contribute to improving the quality of care and ultimately, the overall well-being of individuals and communities.

Moreover, as I learned more about the health sciences program at Missouri, I was impressed by the diverse range of opportunities it offered for hands-on experience in research, clinical practice, and community outreach. The program's emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and holistic approaches to health also resonated with me and further motivated me to pursue this major.

In conclusion, my personal experiences, combined with my desire to make a positive impact in the field of healthcare, have led me to choose a major in health sciences at Missouri. I am excited about the prospect of gaining the knowledge and skills needed to fulfill my passion for helping others and to contribute to the advancement of healthcare.
