Godspell: A Community Godsend by Katelyn - January 2017 Scholarship Essay

During the summer before my senior year of high school I was involved in a production of the musical Godspell. The musical was produced by a small local theatre company in my area. It was pulled together by a bunch of amateurs and high school students. It was rehearsed in a basement. It was one of the best experiences of my high school career. I loved the music and I especially loved my cast mates. I have always loved theatre and performing but this was the first time that I was able to use my love of performing to make others happy.
Godspell was performed for The Woods School. It is a non-profit organization that helps and teaches young people with disabilities. I loved being able to give these kids a day out in the theatre. All of my cast mates and I signed playbills for them and went out during intermission in character and interacted with the kids. We were able to give them a real theatre experience in a way that the school cannot always give them. The Woods School is not really able to afford big trips. This local production was perfect for them and I was so proud to be a part of it.
After Godspell a couple of friends and I worked on planning a cabaret to perform for the school again. I love being able to bring theatre to people that cannot often make it to bigger productions. Our small, local and free shows give the opportunity to many members of the community, including folks from local retirement homes, to experience theatre in a genuine fashion. Theatre and art affects everyone. It is an important part of the human experience. I am happy to be able to bring it to anyone and everyone in the community.
