Struggle to success by Katelyn - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my high school journey, I have encountered various challenges, but one of the most significant academic hurdles I faced was during my sophomore year in Chemistry class. Science has always been a subject that intrigued me, especially because I plan to major in Nursing, where a solid understanding of science is essential. However, Chemistry turned out to be more difficult than I anticipated.
At the beginning of the semester, I struggled with grasping the concepts of chemical reactions and balancing equations. No matter how much time I spent reading the textbook or reviewing my notes, the material seemed to slip through my fingers. My grades reflected my struggles, and I felt discouraged and anxious about my future in the sciences, which was particularly concerning given my aspirations in Nursing.
Recognizing that I needed to take action, I decided to seek help. The first step I took was to approach my Chemistry teacher after class. I was nervous about admitting that I was having trouble, but I knew it was necessary. My teacher was understanding and offered to help me during lunch breaks and after school. These one-on-one sessions were incredibly beneficial, as she was able to explain the concepts in a way that made more sense to me. She also provided additional practice problems, which helped reinforce what I learned.
In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also finding the material challenging. We met twice a week to go over homework assignments and prepare for upcoming tests. Working with my peers allowed me to see different perspectives on solving problems, and teaching each other concepts helped solidify my understanding. The support from my classmates made the learning process more enjoyable and less isolating.
Another strategy that helped me overcome my struggles in Chemistry was using online resources. I found educational videos and interactive simulations that explained the concepts visually, which was particularly helpful for a visual learner like me. These resources provided me with different ways of understanding the material, complementing what I learned in class and during tutoring sessions.
As I began to understand the material better, my confidence grew. I started participating more in class, asking questions, and engaging in discussions. This active involvement not only helped me learn more effectively but also showed my teacher that I was committed to improving. Over time, my grades improved, and by the end of the semester, I was proud to have earned a B in the class.
This experience taught me several valuable lessons. First, it showed me the importance of seeking help when needed. Asking for assistance is not a sign of weakness but a step towards growth and understanding. It also highlighted the value of collaboration and learning from others. Working with my teacher and classmates made the challenge more manageable and less daunting.
Moreover, overcoming this academic challenge reinforced my determination to pursue a career in Nursing. It reminded me that while the path may not always be easy, persistence and a willingness to seek out resources can lead to success. The skills I developed in problem-solving, collaboration, and resilience will undoubtedly be beneficial as I continue my education and eventually enter the healthcare field.
In conclusion, facing difficulties in Chemistry was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It was a test of my perseverance and willingness to adapt my learning strategies. By taking proactive steps to address my struggles, I not only improved my grades but also gained confidence in my ability to tackle future challenges. This experience underscored my commitment to my future studies in Nursing, where I hope to apply these lessons and make a positive impact in the lives of others.
