My name is Katherine Davison, and I am a sophomore majoring in Education at Western Governors University. Reflecting on my academic journey, one of the most challenging experiences I have faced was during my first year in college. Like many students, I entered college with a mix of excitement and anxiety. I was eager to dive into my studies and pursue my passion for education, but I quickly realized that the transition from high school to college was more difficult than I had anticipated.
The first semester was particularly tough. I struggled to balance my coursework with the demands of college life. I was taking a full load of classes, each with its own set of expectations and deadlines. On top of that, I was adjusting to living away from home for the first time. It was overwhelming, and I found myself falling behind in some of my classes. My GPA at the end of the semester was not what I had hoped for, and I knew I needed to make some changes.
One of the most challenging courses for me was an introductory class on educational psychology. The material was fascinating, but I had a hard time keeping up with the reading and understanding the complex theories. I remember sitting in the library one night, surrounded by textbooks and notes, feeling completely lost. It was a moment of self-doubt, and I questioned whether I was cut out for this path.
However, I was determined not to give up. I realized that I needed to change my approach to studying and managing my time. I started by seeking help from my professors and academic advisors. They were incredibly supportive and offered valuable advice on how to tackle the coursework. I also reached out to classmates who seemed to have a good grasp of the material, and we formed a study group. Meeting regularly with them not only helped me understand the content better but also provided a sense of camaraderie and support.
In addition to seeking help from others, I made a conscious effort to improve my time management skills. I began using a planner to organize my assignments and set specific goals for each day. Breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable parts made them feel less daunting. I also set aside dedicated study time each day, treating it as a non-negotiable appointment with myself.
Another important step was learning to prioritize self-care. I realized that I could not perform well academically if I was not taking care of my physical and mental well-being. I made sure to get enough sleep, eat healthily, and incorporate exercise into my routine. These small changes had a big impact on my energy levels and ability to focus.
As the semester progressed, I started to see improvements. My grades in educational psychology and other courses began to rise, and I felt more confident in my abilities. It was a gradual process, but each small victory motivated me to keep pushing forward. By the end of the year, my GPA had improved significantly, and I felt proud of the progress I had made.
This challenging experience taught me several valuable lessons. First, it reminded me of the importance of perseverance and resilience. There will always be obstacles in life, but facing them head-on and seeking solutions is key to overcoming them. Second, it highlighted the power of asking for help and building a support network. I learned that I do not have to navigate these challenges alone and that there are always people willing to lend a hand. Finally, it underscored the significance of self-care and balance. Taking care of myself is just as important as my academic pursuits.
As I continue my studies in education, I carry these lessons with me. I am passionate about becoming a teacher and helping future students navigate their own challenges. I want to create a classroom environment where students feel supported and encouraged to persevere, just as I was during my difficult first year. This experience has not only strengthened my resolve to succeed in my own academic journey but has also fueled my desire to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
