Challenges of College by Keeley - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a college freshman at Colorado State University, I have already encountered several academic challenges, but one stands out as particularly formative. Transitioning from high school to college is a significant change for any student, and I found myself facing a unique challenge in balancing my dual interest in engineering and environmental conservation. This balancing act required me to adapt my study habits and time management skills in ways I had never experienced before.

In high school, I was always drawn to subjects like math and science, which naturally led me to pursue engineering. My GPA of 3.6 reflected my dedication and hard work. However, I also had a deep interest in environmental issues, something that has been a passion of mine since I was young. When I arrived at Colorado State, I saw an opportunity to combine these interests by majoring in both engineering and environmental conservation. The prospect was exciting, but it quickly became apparent that managing these demanding fields would be a challenge.

The first semester was particularly tough. Each major came with its own set of rigorous courses and expectations. Civil and mechanical engineering classes required intense focus on technical skills and concepts, while environmental conservation courses demanded a broader understanding of ecological systems and policies. The workload was overwhelming, and I struggled to keep up with assignments, labs, and projects.

One of the biggest hurdles was time management. In high school, I had a structured schedule, but college required me to take responsibility for managing my own time. I realized that my old habits were not sufficient to handle the increased workload. I needed to find a way to balance my studies without sacrificing my mental health or academic performance.
