Why I Want To Be a Teacher by Keller - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

I have been surrounded by positive influences and role models my whole life which has caused me to be passionate about learning and growing. This taught me that education is not just about acquiring knowledge, but also about developing the skills, values and mindset needed to excel in life. They have fueled my desire to pursue a career in education, specifically as a high school physical education teacher and an athletic director. My passion for sports and my commitment to helping others learn and grow makes this path the perfect fit for me.

One of the most significant influences in my life has been sports. Through sports, I’ve learned the importance of teamwork, perseverance, leadership, and discipline. These lessons have shaped me into who I am today, and they are the values I want to pass on to others.

One of the most significant role models in my life has been my dad. His strong work ethic, dedication and drive taught me the importance of persistence, responsibility and striving to always do my best. I have watched my dad work hard at his career, and also at coaching, which has instilled a sense of discipline in me. He has helped me understand the value of setting goals and working towards them.

As a physical education teacher, teaching physical fitness, teamwork, and healthy living, I would also encourage my students to push past their limits and realize their full potential. I believe that sports and physical activities offer invaluable lessons. I want to help students discover their strengths, learn how to overcome challenges, and build confidence in themselves, all while having fun and staying active.

As an athletic director, I want to help shape and support the athletic programs at a school, but also mentor student-athletes and coaches. I would create a positive and inclusive sports culture that values hard work, integrity, and respect. I want to help student-athletes balance their academic and athletic pursuits while ensuring that sports programs are a source of pride for the entire school community.

Pursuing a career in education, particularly in physical education, is a natural extension of my love for learning and sports. I want to create an environment where students can thrive, develop important life skills and discover the joy of being active. I believe that my passion for helping others grow, combined with my enthusiasm for physical fitness, makes me well-suited for this field. I want to be the kind of teacher who not only imparts knowledge but also inspires students to become better versions of themselves, both in the classroom and in life. By encouraging students to stay active, work together, and approach challenges with a positive mindset, I hope to make a lasting impact on their lives and contribute to their overall development. This scholarship would bring me one step closer to turning that vision into a reality, and I am eager to embrace the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of students.
