WI by Kelsey - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
I am a student who is most proud of my academic and athletic leadership at Oconomowoc High School for the past four years. I am a strong candidate for this scholarship because of my leadership, scholarship, service, and character in sports, academics, and the community. I am involved in three varsity sports: basketball, cross country, and track. I have been a three sport athlete for all four years of high school. Being involved in sports all year round, I have learned how to be a dedicated, hard-working team player. In both cross country and basketball, I have volunteered in each of their summer camps. I have shown leadership through teaching younger girls how to train properly and stay motivated. Through these camps I have been influencing girls to create a positive outlet for themselves. In addition, I have been granted the scholar athlete award for my excellent achievement academically (3.5 GPA or higher) and being involved in a varsity sport, I have achieved this honor for the past four years and I will achieve the four year award during my senior year.
Furthermore, I was selected to be a leader in my AP Government and Politics class, which is defined as making sure that other classmates are keeping up with the homework and helping them if they have difficulties. I have tutored students when they are having difficulty with their homework, as well as organized study groups to prepare for upcoming tests. I co-chaired a citizenship project that restored and repainted numerous picnic tables outside of our school.
Also, I was inducted into National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society this past year. For both of those clubs, I will be volunteering my time to tutor students, work concession stands for games, as well as volunteer at other club fairs to promote attendance. In addition, I will be serving as the Vice President of Mock Trial. After getting involved with Mock Trial Club last year, I served as a "witness" for competition. However, I was nominated to be a "mock" lawyer this year for competition by our adviser.
In addition, I have shown leadership in the community through many of the clubs I am involved in. I have organized the blood drive at Oconomowoc High School for the past two years. This past winter I won the regional Future Business Leaders of America competition for my Social Media Campaign and competed at the state level. This year I will be organizing the March of Dimes dodgeball tournament that will be held at the high school. I also am involved in DECA, which I helped organized a group of students to buy presents for the holidays for a student in need.
I have made a difference in my school and community because of my family. Both of my parents have taught me to work extremely hard at school and sports, at a very young age. They taught me that hard work does pay off and to always maintain that consistent work ethic. I have also been a positive role model for my younger brother. He has looked up to me, and has learned that academics will take precedent over other activities. He is a freshman at Oconomowoc High School this year, and has shown leadership academically and athletically. I have been a strong connection to his success, due to the positive example that I have displayed.
Also, I have shown leadership in the work force. I have worked as a hostess at a local restaurant for the past two and a half years. By working in customer service, I have been able to provide a positive connection with the public. I truly enjoy connecting with the public.
I have balanced school, sports, clubs, and work while maintaining a successful academic career at Oconomowoc High School. My responsible qualities show through my hard work and dedication, which makes me an inspirational leader. I enjoy giving back to the community through volunteer work, as well as helping other students succeed in my school community. Furthermore by being involved in the sports community, I have been able to apply the lessons of teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. I am an inspiration for others to follow.
