My Major and why I choose it. by Kelsey - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

My degree plans include attending The Mat-su College in Palmer. I live nearby and can make it happen overtime. I have prepared a lot in the scientific field with several advanced science classes in my schedule like chemistry, biology, and environmental science. I learned chemistry first so I could better understand the next two classes. In environmental science I focused on better sustainability and political issues. Now, I am learning how to make a vaccine and influence DNA for an expected outcome. All of this will prepare me for my ultimate goal of becoming a veterinarian.
I believe becoming a veterinarian is my calling and will make me a better person. I am working on volunteering more for right now. However, my impact is limited. As of now, I am not specialized in anything. Once I get the necessary training, I can help others more. The Iditarod is a uniquely Alaskan event. I want to keep it alive as it supports traditions that make the last frontier home such as large gatherings and surviving the harsh climates. That’s why when they ask for volunteers I will answer the call.
I’ve had long discussions with my counselor and have contacted the advisor of the program. To make myself stand out, in the first year of college I will take a math 105 class or higher. I will also need to take a writing English class to make sure I am on point. I will be applying as a full time student and taking classes to help me succeed. I will also job shadow veterinarian technicians until I better understand the field.
The summertime will be work time. I will continue to take classes so there is no break for me to not become educated. Upon someone asking my favorite subject, my answer is not a mere class or subject but learning in general. Another overall goal of mine is becoming a well rounded person. I have taken many classes and jumped at opportunities to try new things including learning how to be a teacher in Educators Rising; great things can come from varied experience.
With my veterinary technician associate's degree of two years, I will be able to find an employed job in a local animal facility. I will shadow veterinarians in this time while transferring to The University of Fairbanks. This is where I will use my experiences the most to become an animal doctor. They are the only school in Alaska, my permanent home, that offers veterinary schooling.
I hope to someday work with animals that directly impact people’s lives such as survival or working dogs. They are more than just pets but transportation, protectors, and helpers. That’s the message I want to tell people. This profession will help people with disabilities live sustainable lives and more.
I know that college is the place for me, I just need the opportunity to get there. I have taken advanced placement classes, college exams, and dual enrollment classes throughout my high school career. Currently, I am taking an online Faith Bible institute class that will earn me credits and more. I am thrilled to attend in person as soon as this next fall semester begins. Thank you for this opportunity.
