My fifth grade teacher by Kelvin - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
The teacher that had a profound impact on me was my fifth-grade teacher was Dell Phillips. she pushed me in ways that I am forever grateful for. This journey became a lifelong relationship that helped shape me joy for being and understanding a lifelong learner was essential to my growth as a human being. She gave me a joy for reading through making read Charlottee's Web and Green Eggs and Ham several times during that school year. Through her reading those books and jumping into the characters in the book helped stretch my imagination. But more importantly it made me want to pick up books and read more than ever. Ms. Phillips was not only my fifth-grade teacher, but she became family to me. I became a "fourth child" to her and Mr. Phillips. Through Ms. Phillips, I grew exponentially not just in reading, but in math and social studies. I became an honor roll student for the rest of my public-school career. When I was looking for a job, she convinced me to get into the education field and for over twenty years I have flourished. Sadly, Ms. Phillips passed away in 2014 and before she passed, I made a promise to try to honor her impact on my life by showing students that there is a world of infinite possibilities and joy through reading.
