My struggles with high school by Kevin - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my high school journey, I have faced several challenges, but one stands out as particularly impactful. It was during my senior year, in my Intro To Computer Science class. This class was my first real dive into programming, and I was both excited and nervous about it. I had always been interested in computers and technology, but I quickly realized that my enthusiasm did not automatically translate into understanding the material.

The first few weeks of the course were manageable. We started with the basics, and I was able to keep up with the pace. However, as we delved deeper into more complex topics like algorithms and data structures, I found myself struggling. The concepts were difficult to grasp, and my grades began to slip. I felt overwhelmed and started to doubt my ability to succeed in a field I was passionate about.

The turning point came when we were assigned a project that required us to create a program from scratch. I spent hours staring at my computer screen, trying to figure out where to start. My initial attempts were riddled with errors, and I felt frustrated and stuck. It seemed like no matter how hard I tried, I could not get the program to work correctly.

I knew I needed help, but I was hesitant to ask for it. I did not want to admit that I was struggling, and I feared that my classmates would think less of me. However, as the deadline for the project approached, I realized that I could not do it alone. I swallowed my pride and reached out to my teacher for guidance.

My teacher was incredibly supportive. He encouraged me to break the problem down into smaller, more manageable parts and to tackle each one individually. He also suggested that I form a study group with some of my classmates. At first, I was unsure about this idea, but I decided to give it a try.

Working with my peers turned out to be one of the best decisions I made. We were all facing similar challenges, and it was comforting to know that I was not alone in my struggles. We spent hours after school discussing concepts, sharing ideas, and helping each other debug our programs. The collaborative environment helped me see the problems from different perspectives, which was crucial in understanding the material more deeply.

Through persistence and teamwork, I was able to complete the project successfully. I learned that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but a step towards improvement. The experience taught me the importance of collaboration and communication, skills that are essential in both academic and professional settings.

This challenging experience also reinforced my passion for computer science. Despite the difficulties, I found joy in problem-solving and creating something from nothing. It solidified my decision to pursue a major in computer engineering or computer science in college. I am particularly interested in attending Rutgers University, Kean University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, or Caldwell University, where I can further develop my skills and knowledge in this field.

Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the struggle because it taught me resilience and the value of perseverance. It showed me that challenges are opportunities for growth and that with determination and support, I can overcome obstacles. My GPA of 3.22 may not be the highest, but it reflects my journey of learning and improvement.

In college, I plan to continue embracing challenges and seeking out opportunities to learn and grow. I am excited about the prospect of working on projects and collaborating with others who share my passion for technology. I believe that my experiences have prepared me to contribute positively to the academic community and to make the most of the opportunities that college will offer.

In conclusion, the challenges I faced in my Intro To Computer Science class were a pivotal moment in my academic journey. They tested my resolve and taught me valuable lessons about seeking help, working with others, and persisting through difficulties. These lessons have not only prepared me for college but have also shaped me into a more determined and resourceful individual. I am eager to apply what I have learned as I pursue my dreams in the field of computer science.
