Academic challenges by Khadeeja - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My journey as a mechanical engineering student at Wayne State University has been filled with exciting discoveries and rewarding challenges. However, one of the most significant academic challenges I faced was during my freshman year, when I encountered the rigorous demands of my Calculus II course. This experience tested not only my mathematical skills but also my resilience and determination to succeed in a field I am passionate about.

Calculus II was a crucial course for my major, and I knew that mastering it was essential for my future studies in mechanical engineering. From the beginning, the course presented complex concepts and a fast-paced curriculum that was unlike anything I had encountered in high school. As a Middle Eastern woman in a predominantly male field, I already felt the pressure to prove myself, and I was determined to excel.

Despite my efforts, I found myself struggling to keep up with the material. The lectures seemed to fly by, and I often left class feeling overwhelmed and unsure of my understanding. My first exam did not go as well as I had hoped, which was a significant blow to my confidence. I realized that my usual study habits were not enough, and I needed to find a new approach if I wanted to succeed.

The first step I took was to seek help. I reached out to my professor during office hours, where I explained my difficulties and asked for guidance. My professor was incredibly supportive and suggested additional resources, such as tutoring sessions and study groups. I joined a study group with some classmates, which proved to be an invaluable resource. Working with others allowed me to see different perspectives on solving problems and clarified concepts that had previously seemed confusing.

In addition to seeking help from others, I also had to improve my self-discipline and time management skills. I created a structured study schedule, dedicating specific hours each day to review lecture notes, complete practice problems, and revisit challenging topics. I also made use of online resources, such as educational videos and forums, to reinforce my understanding.

As I began to implement these changes, I noticed a gradual improvement in my performance. I started to feel more confident in my abilities, and my exam scores reflected this growth. The process taught me the importance of persistence and adaptability in the face of challenges. It was not just about working harder, but also working smarter and being open to new methods of learning.

Another significant aspect of overcoming this challenge was maintaining a positive mindset. There were times when I felt discouraged, but I reminded myself of my passion for mechanical engineering and my long-term goals. I drew inspiration from successful women in STEM who had faced similar obstacles and persevered. Their stories motivated me to keep pushing forward, even when the path seemed daunting.

This experience also highlighted the importance of community and support. My classmates, professor, and family played a crucial role in helping me navigate this challenge. Their encouragement and belief in my potential gave me the strength to continue, even when I doubted myself.

By the end of the semester, I had not only improved my grades in Calculus II but also gained a deeper appreciation for the subject. The challenge had transformed into an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. I learned that setbacks are not a reflection of my capabilities, but rather a chance to learn and evolve.

In conclusion, the challenge I faced in my Calculus II course was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It taught me valuable lessons about seeking help, adapting my strategies, and maintaining resilience. These skills have become an integral part of my approach to learning and have prepared me for future challenges in my mechanical engineering studies. I am grateful for the experience, as it has strengthened my resolve to succeed and pursue my passion for engineering.
