Challenging Academic Experience by Kirk - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As a sophomore at Central Connecticut State University majoring in Biology, I have always been passionate about understanding the intricacies of life and the natural world. My journey through college has been filled with rewarding experiences, but it has also presented me with significant challenges. One of the most daunting academic experiences I faced occurred during my freshman year, in an introductory biology course that tested not only my knowledge but also my resilience and determination.
When I first enrolled in the course, I was excited to dive deeper into the subject I loved. However, as the semester progressed, I found myself struggling to keep up with the rapid pace and the sheer volume of material. The course covered a wide range of topics, from cellular biology to ecology, and each lecture introduced complex concepts that required a deep understanding and the ability to connect different ideas. Despite my efforts to stay on top of the coursework, I consistently scored lower than I expected on quizzes and exams. This was disheartening, especially since biology had always been my strongest subject in high school.
The turning point came after I received a disappointing grade on a midterm exam. I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. The first step I took was to reach out for help. I scheduled a meeting with my professor to discuss my performance and to seek advice. During our conversation, she emphasized the importance of active learning and suggested several strategies that could help me improve my understanding of the material. She encouraged me to engage more actively during lectures, participate in study groups, and utilize office hours for additional support.
Taking her advice to heart, I joined a study group with a few classmates who were also eager to improve their grades. We met regularly to review lecture notes, discuss challenging topics, and quiz each other. This collaborative environment allowed me to gain new perspectives and to learn from my peers. Additionally, I made it a habit to attend office hours with specific questions, which not only helped clarify my doubts but also demonstrated my commitment to improving.
Another crucial change I made was to enhance my study techniques. I began incorporating active recall and spaced repetition into my study routine, which are evidence-based methods known to improve retention. Instead of passively reading the textbook, I started creating flashcards and testing myself on key concepts. This approach helped reinforce my understanding and made it easier to recall information during exams.
Balancing my time effectively was another challenge I had to overcome. With multiple courses demanding my attention, I learned to prioritize tasks and manage my schedule more efficiently. I used a planner to organize my assignments and set aside specific times for studying, ensuring that I dedicated enough time to each subject without feeling overwhelmed.
Through these efforts, I gradually saw improvement in my performance. My quiz scores began to rise, and I felt more confident in my ability to tackle complex problems. By the end of the semester, I had not only improved my grade in the course but also gained valuable skills that would benefit me in future academic pursuits.
This challenging experience taught me the importance of perseverance and adaptability. It reinforced the idea that setbacks are not failures but opportunities to learn and grow. By seeking help, embracing new strategies, and staying committed to my goals, I was able to overcome the difficulties I faced. This experience also deepened my appreciation for the field of biology and strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in this area.
As a Black woman in STEM, I am aware of the challenges that lie ahead, but I am also inspired by the potential to contribute to a more diverse and inclusive scientific community. My journey through this academic challenge has equipped me with the resilience and determination necessary to navigate future obstacles. I am excited to continue my studies in biology, driven by a passion to explore the wonders of life and to make a meaningful impact in the world.
In conclusion, overcoming this academic challenge was a pivotal moment in my college journey. It taught me valuable lessons about the power of persistence, the importance of seeking help, and the effectiveness of strategic learning techniques. These lessons will undoubtedly serve me well as I continue my education and work towards achieving my goals.
