A Struggle Overcame: Battle of Pre-Calculus by Kourtlynn - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As I reflect on my high school journey, one challenging academic experience stands out: my struggle with pre-calculus during my senior year. Math had always been one of my favorite subjects, and I had excelled in it throughout my earlier years. However, pre-calculus was different. It was more abstract, and I found myself grappling with concepts that did not come as easily to me as algebra or geometry had. This experience taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, seeking help, and the importance of a growth mindset.

When I first started pre-calculus, I was excited yet apprehensive. The initial lessons seemed manageable, but as we delved deeper into trigonometric functions and complex equations, I began to feel overwhelmed. The pace of the class was fast, and I struggled to keep up with the new material. My grades, which had always been a source of pride, started to slip. I felt frustrated and embarrassed, questioning my abilities and wondering if I was cut out for a future in engineering.

Despite these feelings, I knew I could not give up. I was determined to overcome this challenge and prove to myself that I could succeed. The first step I took was acknowledging that I needed help. This was not easy for me, as I was used to being self-reliant in my studies. However, I realized that reaching out was not a sign of weakness but rather a step towards growth.

I began attending after-school tutoring sessions with my pre-calculus teacher, who was incredibly supportive and patient. She helped me break down complex concepts into more manageable parts and provided additional practice problems to reinforce my understanding. Her encouragement and belief in my potential gave me the confidence to keep trying, even when I felt like giving up.

In addition to tutoring, I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were facing similar challenges. We met regularly to review notes, work through problems together, and share tips and strategies. This collaborative approach not only helped me grasp difficult topics but also made the learning process more enjoyable. We celebrated each other's successes and supported one another through setbacks, which made a significant difference in my attitude towards the subject.

Another key factor in overcoming this challenge was adopting a growth mindset. I learned to view my struggles not as failures but as opportunities to learn and improve. I reminded myself that understanding pre-calculus was a process and that it was okay to make mistakes along the way. This shift in perspective helped me stay motivated and focused on my goals.

Over time, my hard work and persistence paid off. My grades began to improve, and I started to feel more confident in my abilities. By the end of the semester, I had not only passed the class with a grade I was proud of, but I had also developed a deeper appreciation for the subject. This experience taught me that challenges are a natural part of the learning process and that with determination and the right support, they can be overcome.

Looking back, I am grateful for the lessons I learned during this challenging time. My struggle with pre-calculus strengthened my problem-solving skills and taught me the value of collaboration and seeking help when needed. These skills will undoubtedly serve me well as I pursue a degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering at Morehead State University.

I am excited about the opportunity to continue my education and explore my passion for engineering. I know that college will present its own set of challenges, but I am confident that I have the tools and mindset to tackle them head-on. My experience with pre-calculus has shown me that I am capable of overcoming obstacles and that perseverance and resilience are key to achieving my goals.

In conclusion, my challenging experience with pre-calculus was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It taught me the importance of seeking help, working collaboratively, and maintaining a growth mindset. These lessons have prepared me for the challenges that lie ahead in college and beyond. I am eager to apply what I have learned as I pursue my dreams and contribute to the field of engineering.
