The Hurdle Fell by LaDajzah - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my high school journey, I have faced many academic challenges, but one that stands out the most is my struggle with math. As someone who has always been passionate about helping others and pursuing a career in nursing, I knew that a strong foundation in math and science was crucial. However, math has never been my strongest subject, and it often felt like an uphill battle.
During my junior year, I was enrolled in an advanced math class that was particularly challenging for me. The concepts were complex, and I often found myself lost during lectures. My grades were slipping, and I felt a growing sense of frustration. I knew that if I wanted to pursue nursing at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), I needed to overcome this hurdle.
The turning point came when I decided to take a proactive approach to improve my math skills. I realized that I could not do it alone, so I reached out for help. I started by attending extra help sessions with my math teacher. These sessions allowed me to ask questions freely and receive guidance on topics I found difficult. My teacher was supportive and explained things in a way that was easier for me to understand.
Additionally, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also struggling with math. We met regularly to review material, work through problems together, and support each other. This collaborative environment helped me gain different perspectives and learn new strategies for solving problems. It was reassuring to know that I was not alone in my struggles, and we motivated each other to keep pushing forward.
I also utilized online resources to supplement my learning. There are numerous educational websites and videos dedicated to math topics. Watching these videos allowed me to learn at my own pace, pausing and replaying sections as needed. This was especially helpful when preparing for exams, as I could focus on the areas where I needed the most improvement.
Through these efforts, I began to see progress. My grades improved, and I gained a better understanding of the material. More importantly, I developed a newfound confidence in my ability to tackle challenging subjects. This experience taught me the value of perseverance and the importance of utilizing available resources.
Overcoming my struggles in math reinforced my determination to pursue a career in nursing. I realized that the skills I developed while tackling math challenges—such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and resilience—are essential in the nursing field. As I prepare to attend UNCG, I am excited to continue building on these skills and applying them to my studies and future career.
In conclusion, my struggle with math was a significant academic challenge that taught me valuable lessons. It showed me the importance of seeking help, collaborating with others, and using available resources to overcome obstacles. These lessons will undoubtedly serve me well as I embark on my college journey and pursue my passion for nursing. I am grateful for the experience, as it has prepared me to face future challenges with determination and an open mind.
